Family Days Out in Islamabad
Travel advisory, 31 October 2026. The US State Department lists Pakistan at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (page dated 16 June 2026), and advises against or to reconsider travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The UK FCDO page, updated 27 October 2026, does not name Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree or Taxila, but it advises against all or all but essential travel to other parts of the country, including parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Islamabad has seen serious attacks, among them a district-court bombing in November 2025 and a mosque bombing at Tarlai on the city edge on 6 February 2026. Read travel.state.gov and the UK travel advice before you book. Expect checkpoints, protest road closures and mobile-network shutdowns, stay away from crowds and demonstrations, and carry your original passport.
Family outings in Islamabad
Islamabad has no visitor zoo. Marghazar Zoo closed in December 2020, and the site is now a wildlife rescue centre that does not take visitors. A safari park at Malpur is only a plan. The activities below are the ones that run today.
Bird Aviary at Lake View Park
The Islamabad Bird Aviary is at Lake View Park on Rawal Lake. A ticket costs about PKR 100 for adults and PKR 50 for children. Park entry is reported at about PKR 20 to 50. Pedal and rowing boats run when the park permits, and motorised boating on the lake has been banned by district orders more than once.
Museums at Shakarparian
The Pakistan Monument Museum and the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum are close together. Foreign adults pay about PKR 2,000 at each, and children under 7 go free. Both close on Mondays. The Pakistan Monument Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00. It covers the Pakistan Movement and independence, with corners for Jinnah and Iqbal. The monument outside has four large petals for the provinces and three smaller ones. See Lok Virsa for current prices.
Golra Sharif Railway Museum
Children who like trains can visit the railway museum at Golra Sharif. It opens about 09:00 to 16:00, and to 13:00 on Fridays. Tickets are about PKR 50, so confirm at the gate.
Fatima Jinnah Park
Fatima Jinnah Park in F-9 has playgrounds and walking loops. There is no zoo there.
Indoor options
Centaurus Mall in F-8 has an indoor fun zone, and Megazone is in F-9 Park. Check opening days and prices before you go.
Margalla trails with children
Trail 5 is the easier of the park trails, starting near F-5. Leopards live in the park, so walk in daylight in a group, stay off the trail at dawn and dusk, and be out before sunset. Macaques and wild boar are common. The district administration closes trails for rain, so look for the day’s notice on the CDA adventure page .
Tips for families
Foreigner tickets are often 5 to 10 times the local price, so budget for museum entry in PKR. Carry water, hats and your original passport. Daman-e-Koh is free and has city views, but macaques snatch food, so keep snacks in a bag.
