Crete Itineraries for Four to Five Days
Crete is too long to cross in a morning. Driving from Chania in the west to Sitia in the east takes more than four and a half hours, and the roads over the mountains to the south coast are slow and steep. Rather than crossing back and forth, pick one half of the island and stay put for four or five days. The two plans below each use a single base. Prices are in euros, and wildfire risk is high from April to October, so check local fire alerts and weather closures in summer.
West circuit, based in Chania
Day 1, Chania Old Town. Walk the Venetian harbour out to the lighthouse, then the Firkas fortress at the harbour mouth and the Venetian arsenals. The Archaeological Museum of Chania costs EUR 15 or EUR 8, opens 08:00 to 20:00 from April to October, and is closed every Tuesday. Etz Hayyim synagogue is the island’s last Jewish monument and deserves a quiet visit. It is open Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 16:00 and Friday 10:00 to 15:00, closed at weekends and on public holidays, and admission is EUR 4.
Day 2, Balos and Gramvousa. Take a day boat from Kissamos port, about 45 minutes from Chania, or drive the rough track from Kaliviani. Boats run from May to October, with adult fares from about EUR 25 to 45. Your rental contract may not cover damage on dirt roads.
Day 3, Samaria Gorge. Catch an early bus to Xyloskalo, walk about 16 km to Agia Roumeli, then take the afternoon boat to Chora Sfakion and the connecting bus to Chania. It is a hard day, and the gorge is open roughly May to October.
Day 4, Elafonisi. The drive is about 76 km and takes up to two hours. Arrive before 10:00 for the quietest lagoon, and keep to the marked paths in this protected area.
Day 5, Rethymno and Preveli. Rethymno has a Venetian old town and a fortress, with entry about EUR 4 to 5. Preveli beach is about 35 km south, down a stairway of 300 to 450 steps.
East circuit, based in Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos
Day 1, Heraklion. Knossos is EUR 20 or EUR 10 reduced, and the Archaeological Museum is EUR 20 from 1 April to 31 October and EUR 12 from 1 November to 31 March. They are separate tickets. In the afternoon walk the harbour to Koules fortress, at EUR 10 or EUR 5 and closed on Tuesdays.
Day 2, vineyards and the Lasithi Plateau. Drive through the Peza wine area, then climb to the plateau at about 850 m and visit Dikteon Cave, which costs EUR 15 or EUR 8 and is closed on Tuesdays. It reopened on 29 May 2026, so check before you go. Sleep in Agios Nikolaos.
Day 3, Mirabello Bay and Spinalonga. Cross from Plaka, pay EUR 20 or EUR 10 for the island plus the boat fare, and treat the former leprosy colony with respect. Swim at Elounda in the afternoon.
Day 4, the south coast. Cross to the Messara Plain for Phaistos at EUR 15 or EUR 8 and Gortyn at EUR 10 or EUR 5. At Matala the cave cliffs are an old Roman cemetery, so swim from the beach but do not climb or jump, and expect an entry fee of about EUR 5 in cash.
Day 5, Gournes and Heraklion. Spend the morning at Cretaquarium, EUR 15 for adults, and the afternoon at the Natural History Museum before you leave.
The E4 coastal trek
The E4 long-distance path crosses Crete from Kastelli Kissamou in the west to Kato Zakros in the east, about 500 km. The favourite section for walkers runs along the south coast of Chania from Sougia to Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Chora Sfakion in three to four days, sleeping in simple guesthouses. Carry at least three litres of water, sun protection and a navigation app, and move early in summer.
