Kairouan Medina Walk From the Martyrs Gate
Kairouan’s old town is flat, which makes it one of the easier medinas to walk. Allow about 3 hours for the route below, start early, and finish before the monuments close in the early afternoon.
The route
- Bab ech-Chouhada. Begin at the Martyrs Gate in the ramparts. The walls were restored by the end of 2025, after a section collapsed in December 2023. Look at them from outside, and do not plan a climb.
- The souks. Follow the main lanes inward past brass, leather and textile stalls. The lanes are cooler before 10:00.
- Mosque of the Three Doors. An active mosque founded in 866 CE. Stop in the street to look at the carved facade, one of the earliest decorated mosque facades in Islamic architecture.
- Great Mosque courtyard. Finish here. Non-Muslims cannot enter the prayer hall but can look in from the open doorways, and the courtyard is open. Hours are 07:30 to 14:00 in summer, 08:00 to 14:00 in winter and Ramadan, with Fridays ending at 12:00. Check the official page .
Outside the dense core
The Sidi Amor Abada museum lies in the Abada suburb, so reach it by taxi rather than on foot. It closes on Monday. The surroundings of the Aghlabid Basins can also be viewed from outside, though the site is under restoration, so ask locally about access.
Rules for the street
- Say no politely to anyone who invites you to a free rooftop view or tells you a festival is on today. They are steering you to a carpet shop.
- If you do go in, ask the price before you accept tea. The Governor’s House shop is free to enter and has a roof terrace, but the selling is persistent.
- Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and women should carry a scarf for the mosque.
- The Souks El Majel are closed and neglected, so leave them off the route.
Heat and timing
Summer highs above 40 C are normal in July and August, and the pale courtyard has little shade. Start at 08:00, carry water and wear a hat. In winter you can start later, but the monuments still close early.
Getting to the start
Kairouan has no railway line. Louages and buses reach it from Tunis, about 126 km and about 2 hours away, and from Sousse. The stations sit on the edge of the medina. Ask your hotel for the best way to reach Bab ech-Chouhada.
Money
Carry cash in TND for the souks. Heritage fees changed on 1 April 2026, and a major monument costs about 20 to 30 TND for foreign visitors. Ask for the current price at the ticket booth. Pupils and students pay a reduced 2 TND.
Make it longer
If you want a guide, licensed guides carry Ministry of Tourism credentials. Agree the price and route first. You can also browse Kairouan walking tours to see what is offered from nearby cities.
