Kingston Stays of Three to Five Days
Travel advice, October 2026: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime, concentrated in inner-city neighbourhoods, and both the UK FCDO and the US State Department name areas to avoid, including parts of Kingston. Use licensed or hotel-arranged transport, avoid walking after dark, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go.
Three days cover Kingston’s main strands: music and colonial heritage Uptown, the harbour and Port Royal, and the Blue Mountains. Two more days add Downtown Kingston and the Portland coast. Each day below starts and ends in New Kingston, which is the safest base, and every transfer assumes a hotel driver, a Jamaica Tourist Board approved taxi or a ride-hailing app. Prices are in US dollars unless marked J$.
Three days
Day 1: Uptown music and heritage
Begin at the Bob Marley Museum, 56 Hope Road, for the 75-minute home tour (US$25 adults, US$12 children aged 4 to 12). Tours leave hourly from 10:00 to 16:00, Monday to Saturday. Lunch at the Devon House Bakery, with a curried lobster or callaloo and saltfish patty, then two scoops at Devon House I-Scream. In the afternoon take the Devon House mansion tour, which runs until 16:00 on weekdays, and visit the Peter Tosh Museum at the Pulse Centre, 38A Trafalgar Road, after confirming it is open, as one listing shows it closed. For dinner, Strawberry Hill in Irish Town sits at about 3,100 ft. Confirm it is open and who runs it before you book, as one report says it was offered for sale.
Day 2: Port Royal and Lime Cay
Drive to Port Royal, about 25 km from New Kingston along the Palisadoes. See Fort Charles, Nelson’s Quarterdeck and the Giddy House, then take a local boat from the Y-Knot jetty to Lime Cay for a few hours of swimming. The cay has no facilities, so pack water, food and shade. Return for a late seafood lunch at Gloria’s Rendezvous on Queen Street, after checking it is open.
Day 3: Blue Mountains
Drive up through Newcastle to the Holywell Recreation Area and walk the Oatley Mountain and Waterfall trails, about an hour each. Admission is US$10 for adults. Call the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust on 876-619-9807 first to confirm the trails are open. In the afternoon, tour Craighton Estate, about US$25 for adults. On a Sunday, finish at the Kingston Dub Club in Jack’s Hill, with a pre-booked driver home.
Days four and five
Day 4: Downtown Kingston
In the morning, take a guided visit to the Trench Town Culture Yard, arranged in advance by phone on +1 876-837-0359, and in daylight only. The yard visit costs US$20 and the neighbourhood tour US$40. Treat it as a visit to a living community. Afterwards, go on to the Water Lane murals and the National Gallery of Jamaica at 12 Ocean Boulevard (J$400 for adults, closed Mondays). Leave Downtown before dusk.
Day 5: Portland
Set off early for Portland Parish, about 95 km and 2.5 to 3 hours each way. A bamboo raft on the Rio Grande is a calm float, and jerk pork at Boston Bay is the usual lunch. Frenchman’s Cove is a beach in the area, so check its opening and entry terms before you go. Return the same day or stay in Port Antonio.
Planning notes
The best months are December to April. Rain peaks in May and October, and hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most hotels are in New Kingston, and a stay there can be compared on Booking.com .
