Romantic Getaways in Puerto Ayora
Romance in Puerto Ayora is quiet and outdoors. The town has a waterfront, a few calm beaches, boat trips and highland scenery, and the pleasure is in the setting more than in nightlife. This page collects the options for couples, from a sunset on the sand to a stay in the hills. Prices are in US dollars.
Sunset by the water
Playa Mansa, Tortuga Bay. The sheltered bay is the best beach for two, with calm water for swimming, snorkelling or a shared kayak. Reach it by the paved path of about 2.5 km from the edge of town (30 to 45 minutes, with a sign-in at the park booth), then walk about 20 minutes further along the sand past Playa Brava. Playa Brava has rip currents and is not for swimming. A water taxi from the pier, about USD 10 each way, saves the walk. Visiting hours end at about 18:00, so check the closing time and head back before it. The park can close the beach on short notice if the sea is rough.
Academy Bay waterfront. The Avenida Charles Darwin runs from the municipal pier east to the Charles Darwin Research Station. It is an easy evening walk, with the bay on one side.
Time on a boat
A private or small-group sailing tour with a licensed operator is the most private way onto the water. Operators set their own itineraries and prices, so ask what is included before you book, and remember that all protected landings need a naturalist guide. Wildlife rules still apply, with at least 2 m between you and any animal.
A quieter beach stop
Playa de los Alemanes is a free beach reached by a short water taxi to the far side of the harbour. It sits on the path to Las Grietas, a guided-only site you can visit as a pair. The guided visit costs about USD 10 each and takes about 1.5 hours in total, with a 15 to 20 minute walk from the beach.
Staying in the highlands
The highlands near Santa Rosa have lodges, and a night or two away from the harbour changes the pace of a trip. The reserves of El Chato and Rancho Primicias are on the same road, where wild tortoises cross the paths and entry is about USD 10 with a guide. Compare lodges and rooms by area rather than relying on a single recommendation, and check what each place includes.
Dinner by the harbour
Fresh seafood is on the menu along the waterfront. The Pelican Bay fish market is an open-air stop where fishermen fillet the catch while pelicans and sea lions gather, though opening hours vary, so ask locally.
Practical points for couples
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and leave single-use plastics behind.
- Arrange drone permits through the park about two months ahead if you plan to film.
- Carry small US bills for taxis and entry.
- Check current government advice before you travel. The islands sit outside the mainland areas named in UK advice for Ecuador .
