Day Trips from St Helier by Bus and Boat
Most day trips from St Helier are short bus rides around Jersey, plus two boat options: Les Ecrehous by fast boat and St Malo by ferry. LibertyBus is the only public bus operator, and nearly every route starts at Liberation Station on the Esplanade. Check libertybus.je for current fares and timetables. All prices below are in Jersey pounds, which equal sterling.
Gorey and Mont Orgueil (half day)
Gorey is about 7 km east of town on LibertyBus routes 1, 1A or 2. Mont Orgueil Castle stands above the harbour and was begun in 1204. It is open daily, 10:00 to 17:30 from 1 March to 24 October and 10:00 to 16:00 from 25 October to 31 December, with the last entry an hour before closing. It is closed on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January. Adult tickets cost £19.50, seniors £18.50 and children or students £11.45, and the Jersey Heritage Pass covers it. Afterwards, walk the harbour pier and look for crab and oysters at the waterfront restaurants. More details are on the Jersey Heritage site .
St Brelade’s Bay and Corbiere (half day each)
St Brelade’s Bay is on the south-west coast, about 25 minutes by LibertyBus route 12 or 14. It is a sandy south-facing beach with lifeguard patrols in the season. Look for the Fisherman’s Chapel on the rocks beside the parish church.
La Corbiere Lighthouse, built in 1874, stands on a tidal rock at the south-western tip. Routes 12A and 22 serve it from town. At low water a causeway about 300 m long, a walk of about 10 minutes, leads to the rock. A warning siren sounds before the sea covers the causeway, and if it sounds, walk back at once. Check tide times first at Ports of Jersey . Corbiere is a rocky headland and not a swimming beach.
Jersey Zoo (half day)
Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is at Les Augres Manor in Trinity, on LibertyBus routes 3, 13 and 23. Gerald Durrell founded it in 1959 on 32 acres, and it keeps endangered species such as western lowland gorillas, Sumatran orangutans and Andean bears. Gate prices are £21.00 for adults and £10.50 for children aged 3 to 10, with under-3s free. Booking online in advance saves about 10%. See Durrell for tickets.
Les Ecrehous by boat (half day)
Les Ecrehous is a reef of granite rocks and sandbanks about 6 miles north-east of Jersey, in the parish of St Martin. Jersey Seafaris departs from St Catherine Breakwater, reached on LibertyBus routes 2 and 2A, not from St Helier harbour. Trips last 1.5 to 3 hours and listed adult prices run from about £47.99 to £64.99, so check the current price at Jersey Seafaris . Seals, dolphins and nesting terns are the draw.
Saint-Malo (full day)
DFDS runs Jersey’s ferries to Poole, Portsmouth and St Malo from the Elizabeth terminal. The fast ferry to St Malo follows a day-trip pattern, leaving at about 09:30 and returning at about 18:00, with a crossing of about 2 hours, so confirm times with DFDS. Take a passport, as France is in the Schengen area. The walled corsair town is the reason to go, with its ramparts, cathedral and crêperies.
Sark and Guernsey
Manche Iles Express serves Sark from April to September, and its crossings resume on 3 April 2027. No Jersey to Guernsey passenger ferry is running in 2026, so Guernsey does not work as a day trip. Details are at Manche Iles Express .
