Family Days in Punta del Este
With children, Punta del Este works best if you choose the right beach first and build the rest of the day around it. The peninsula has a sheltered side and an open-ocean side, and they are not interchangeable.
Pick Playa Mansa
Playa Mansa is the family beach. It lies on the western, bay side facing Isla Gorriti, with shallow, sheltered water that suits paddling and young swimmers. It is also a good place to watch the sunset when the day cools.
Playa Brava is a different beach. It faces the open Atlantic, with surf and rip currents (corrientes de resaca), and it is not a calm choice for children. If you stop there, stay within the zone marked by lifeguards and out of any stretch with no service. Lifeguards work a season. In 2025-26 they started on 14 November, on weekends only until December, then daily until 5 April, so ask the Intendencia de Maldonado for current dates before you plan a swim in the shoulder months.
A boat ride to Isla Gorriti
Boats to Isla Gorriti leave from the port, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes, a good length for small children. The island is about 2.5 km off Playa Mansa and has beaches and old cannons to look at. The schedule depends on the season, so check the departure times at the port.
Sea lions from the water
Boats also go to Isla de Lobos, about 8 km southeast of the peninsula, where sea lions and fur seals gather. The island is a protected area and visitors cannot land, so the trip is a viewing ride from the boat. Teach children to keep their distance and never to touch or feed the animals. Wild sea lions are often seen at the harbour near the fish-cleaning area as well; watch from a distance there too, and never feed them.
Museums with free or low entry
Museo Ralli in Los Arrayanes, Beverly Hills, is free. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 17:00 to 21:00 in January and February, and Tuesday to Sunday 14:00 to 18:00 in March, December and around Easter. In April, May, October and November it opens on weekends only, 14:00 to 18:00. The doors are shut on 25 December and 1 January. Check the Museo Ralli page for the latest hours.
Casapueblo at Punta Ballena, about 13 km west of the peninsula, is open every day from 10:00 until sunset. Children under 12 enter free; adults pay UYU 600. The Casapueblo site lists current details.
Planning around the season
Crowds build from about December to February and are thickest in early January. Many beach clubs, restaurants and some museums run reduced hours or close in the cooler months, so confirm opening times before you promise a child a particular stop.
