Romantic Getaway in Punta del Este
Punta del Este suits couples who like slow days, good food and long sunsets. The coast offers a few set pieces that are worth planning around, and most of them cluster at the end of the day.
Sunset at Casapueblo
Casapueblo at Punta Ballena, about 13 km west of the peninsula, was designed and built by the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and begun in 1958. The sunset ceremony runs every evening at sunset, a recording of the artist’s poem played as the light goes. The site advises arriving at least 40 minutes early. The museum is open every day from 10:00 until sunset, and admission is UYU 600. Details are on the Casapueblo site .
Casapueblo also holds a gallery, a cafe and a hotel, so a visit can run well beyond the ceremony: arrive in daylight, see the museum, then stay for the ceremony.
Bodega Garzón
Bodega Garzón sits inland on Camino Arco del Sol in Garzón, and the chef Francis Mallmann is its ambassador and culinary director. Seatings start at 12:30. The menus are UYU 3,900 per person for the Garzón menu and UYU 5,000 per person for the Fire menu. Book 24 hours ahead through the winery restaurant page . The drive from the peninsula takes about an hour.
José Ignacio
José Ignacio is a fishing village turned resort, east of La Barra. Walk to the lighthouse, spend an afternoon on the beach, and have dinner at a beach restaurant such as La Huella. Opening seasons vary, so check before you go, especially outside December to February.
Where to stay
Three hotels to look at are Fasano Las Piedras, Playa Vik José Ignacio and The Grand Hotel, which is on Parada 10 of Playa Brava. Rates and availability change through the year, so check them directly when you plan your dates.
Beach evenings
Playa Mansa, on the sheltered bay side, is the place for a sunset stroll at the water’s edge. Playa Brava, facing the open Atlantic, has rip currents; walk along it, but swim only inside a lifeguard zone.
Getting around as a couple
A rental car or taxi gives you the freedom to chase sunsets along the coast. If you arrive from Montevideo without a car, COT and Copsa coaches run to the Punta del Este terminal about every 20 to 60 minutes and take roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. See the COT site for schedules.
When to go
High season falls roughly between December and February, and the first half of January is the busiest stretch. Outside the peak, many beach clubs and restaurants cut their hours or close, which means quieter beaches and fewer reservations, but less choice for dinner.
