Guided Tours and Attractions in Puerto Ayora
In the Galápagos, most of the places worth seeing can only be visited with a naturalist guide and a licensed operator. That rule covers every protected park visitor site, including all landings on uninhabited islands. From Puerto Ayora, the tours below are the ones that come up most, and the details are worth knowing before you pay a deposit.
How tours work here
Only the town beaches, the Tortuga Bay trail, Playa de los Alemanes and the Avenida Charles Darwin waterfront are self-guided. Everything else goes through a guide. Operators set their own itineraries, group sizes and prices, so compare a few and ask exactly what is included. Park entry (USD 200 for most foreign adults, paid in cash at the airport) is a separate cost from any tour. Look up the park’s current fee schedule before you go.
Highlands tour
A guided Santa Cruz highlands outing usually links the El Chato and Rancho Primicias tortoise reserves, a lava tunnel and the Los Gemelos twin craters beside the highway. The reserves sit next to each other on the road to Santa Rosa, 30 to 45 minutes from town. Wild tortoises wander across the paths, so keep 2 m away. Paths are muddy and boots are often lent at the gate. Reserve entry is about USD 10 per person with a guide, lava tunnel included, so confirm what your tour covers.
Bay tour from the municipal pier
The Tour de Bahía leaves from the municipal pier and tours Academy Bay. It is a light way onto the water if you do not have a full day, and it pairs well with an afternoon at the research station.
Las Grietas
The Las Grietas visit is guided only, at about USD 10 per person. The route is a short water taxi from the pier (USD 1 to 2) and a 15 to 20 minute walk past Playa de los Alemanes. Allow about 1.5 hours with the tour, and book through a licensed operator because the site may be capacity-limited.
Tortoise Route at the breeding center
The Fausto Llerena Breeding Center is run by the Park Directorate beside the Charles Darwin Research Station. The guided Tortoise Route runs from 08:00 to 16:45 and costs about USD 10 with a guide. The trail leads to the exhibit room where the preserved remains of Lonesome George are displayed. George died on 24 June 2012 and has been shown at the centre since 2017. Treat the room as a quiet place.
Boat tours to other islands
Licensed day yachts with a naturalist guide run to North Seymour, known for frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. Isabela can also be a day trip by speedboat with a licensed operator. The crossing takes about 2 hours each way, so a day trip is tight and many people prefer to stay overnight.
Tips for booking
- Carry small US bills for taxis and entry fees.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and leave single-use plastics behind.
- Drones need advance park permission.
- Speedboat crossings can be rough, so take seasickness tablets.
