Romantic Getaways in Madagascar
Travel advisory: Madagascar is under a transitional government that took power in October 2025, and elections are not expected before 2027. The US State Department’s advisory is Level 2, exercise increased caution, with six named Level 3 areas where it says to reconsider travel, among them the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy and the Menabe region south of Morondava. The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel but warns of armed road robbery after dark, attacks on isolated beaches (including Nosy Be) and demonstrations that can turn violent. It advises against taxi-brousse. Kidnappings have been reported in and around Antananarivo. Couples should travel by day, use a recognised operator and fly where they can. Read the FCDO advice and the State Department advisory , and check entry rules before you fly, especially via Nairobi.
Madagascar is a wildlife and landscape destination, and romance here comes in a few small, quiet forms rather than a resort industry. The options are a handful of island lodges in the north-west, a sunset or two in the south and the baobab trees of the west. Plan for simple comfort and long transfers, and book flights with buffer days, because domestic schedules are fragile.
Island lodges near Nosy Be
Constance Tsarabanjina sits on a private islet in the Mitsio archipelago. It has 25 thatched villas and is all-inclusive. Reaching it takes a road leg from Nosy Be airport and then a speedboat of about 90 minutes, or a helicopter in calm weather. It is at the pricey end of the market, and rates are not listed here, so check availability and prices with the resort.
On Nosy Komba, small lodges such as Jardin Vanille and Tsara Komba have around 6 to 9 chalets each. Their trading status in 2026 is unconfirmed, so check availability before planning around them. Nosy Komba is an inhabited island, so expect village life nearby. Some village visits offer lemurs fed with bananas to climb on visitors, and these are best skipped, since feeding harms the animals. On Nosy Be itself, violent robberies have been reported on isolated beaches, even in daylight. Stay on a hotel beach and ask your host before walking to a quiet one.
Sunset at Isalo
Isalo National Park is a sandstone massif near Ranohira on the RN7. Madagascar National Parks lists the Window of Isalo as a sunset viewpoint, and the Piscine Naturelle, a natural pool, is a popular walk. The guide is required. Horse circuits are one of the park’s four circuit types, and prices are not confirmed. Lodges in Ranohira include Relais de la Reine (about 30 rooms, with a pool) and, as a separate property, Jardin du Roy. FCDO reports attacks around Betroka and in the Ilakaka commune near Isalo, so travel by day with a recognised operator. Park entry for foreign adults is reported at 65,000 Ar, with fees set to double from 1 November 2026. Park details are on the MNP Isalo page .
The Avenue of the Baobabs at dusk
About 20 km north of Morondava, a short dirt road is lined with Grandidier’s baobabs. Dusk is the favoured time, and it is free to walk, with a small parking fee for vehicles. A few minutes away, the Baobab Amoureux is two twisted baobabs, and local legend says they are lovers. Fly to Morondava, because the road from Tana crosses a Level 3 stretch. This is a short stop, not a luxury retreat, and the Menabe region south of Morondava should not be part of any plan.
What is not here
There are few romantic lodges outside Nosy Be, and no resort strip. Ambohimanga and the Rova are sacred and historic sites, so treat them as sightseeing rather than a sunset outing. Carry ariary cash, because cards are rarely taken.
