Family Days Out in Madagascar
Travel advisory: Madagascar’s government has been transitional since the army took power in October 2025, and elections are not expected before 2027. The US State Department gives the country Level 2 (exercise increased caution) and designates six Level 3 areas where it advises reconsidering travel, including the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy and the Menabe region south of Morondava. The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel, but it warns about armed robbery on main roads at night, attacks on isolated beaches and violent demonstrations, and it advises against taxi-brousse. Kidnappings have been reported in and around Antananarivo. Families should travel in daylight with a driver-guide or recognised operator. Both advisories are online at gov.uk and travel.state.gov , and entry rules are worth checking before you fly, particularly if you route via Nairobi.
Madagascar rewards families who keep the plan short. Roads are slow and some regions are a long way from the capital, so the easiest days are the ones close to Antananarivo or on the road south toward Ambalavao. The activities below suit school-age children, and each one is guided and takes place in daylight.
Lemurs’ Park
This is the easiest first lemur stop. Lemurs’ Park is at PK 22 on the RN1 toward Ampefy, about 22 to 25 km from Tana. A naturalist guide leads every visit, which lasts up to about 1 hour 30 minutes along a stone-step trail. The park holds seven lemur species, and the path finishes at an open-air vivarium of chameleons, tortoises and lizards, with a terrace and restaurant. It is open daily from 08:00, with last reception at 16:00. Adults pay 75,000 Ar and children aged 5 to 12 pay 30,000 Ar, in cash only. Explain beforehand that the lemurs are not to be touched or fed. The park’s own site is lemurspark.com .
Anja Community Reserve
Anja is a 30-hectare reserve 13 km south of Ambalavao on the RN7, run by the local community association Anja Miray since 2001. It is home to roughly 300 ring-tailed lemurs. Guides are required and the short trail takes 1 to 2 hours. Fees are reported at about 7,000 to 25,000 Ar plus a guide, so confirm at the gate. Feeding is prohibited. Visiting supports a community conservation project, which makes it a good stop for children old enough to stay quiet on a rocky path.
Easy circuits at Andasibe
Analamazaotra National Park is 140 km from Tana on the paved RN2, 3.5 to 5 hours each way, so stay one night. Madagascar National Parks rates Indri 1 and Anivokely as easy, at about 2 hours each. Both are suitable for school-age children, and the indri’s call is a highlight. Expect leeches and rain from November to April. Foreign adults pay 45,000 Ar and foreign children 25,000 Ar, reported to double from 1 November 2026, so check current rates. The guide is extra.
Reptile reserves near Tana
The Peyrieras reserve at Marozevo, about 2 hours from Tana on the RN2, shows chameleons and geckos at close range with a guide. Ask for the current fee and hours. Croc Farm at Ivato, near the airport, is a breeding farm and garden with Nile crocodiles. Hours are reported as 9:00 to 17:00 and the fee as 10,000 to 25,000 Ar, so confirm both. Watch the crocodiles from the path and do not take part in feeding.
Snorkelling at Nosy Tanihely
Older children who swim well can snorkel at this marine park off Nosy Be, with turtles and reef fish. Booking is done online and a marine park ticket applies, so a tour operator usually handles both. Water conditions vary, so ask the boat crew about the sea before children get in. Stay on hotel beaches on Nosy Be itself.
Family health tips
Malaria risk applies everywhere except Antananarivo, so talk to a doctor early about prophylaxis for children. Drink only bottled or treated water, and keep children away from stray animals because rabies is present and treatment is limited. Carry ariary in cash, as cards are rarely accepted.
