Madagascar 4 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Four days is Tana plus Andasibe (see the 3 day version for that core) plus one option: a long single-day push south on the RN7 to Antsirabe and back. It’s an honest add-on, not a comfortable one. If a 16 hour round trip for an afternoon in a spa town doesn’t appeal, skip it and add a third night around Andasibe instead. Our 5 day version fixes this exact problem by turning the dash into an overnight.
Book these before you go: an Andasibe lemur circuit with a guide ; Tana accommodation for three of your four nights; and a driver-guide booked through your lodge rather than arranged cold, since the Antsirabe day trip only works with someone who knows the RN7’s rhythm.
Day 1: Antananarivo
Ivato Airport sits about 16 kilometres from the city centre. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival or e-visa; carry cash, since the visa desk’s card machines aren’t reliable and the 15-day e-visa fee roughly tripled to around 30 euros in February 2026. Visit the Rova hill compound for the view over Tana’s terraced hills (a 1995 fire gutted much of the original palace, so temper expectations of untouched history), then the Analakely market for vanilla and crafts in the afternoon. Get around by taxi or shared minibus and settle the fare before you get in; meters are rare.
Day 2: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Budget three hours each way on the paved RN2, leaving by mid-morning. Andasibe-Mantadia is the most accessible rainforest park from the capital, and the reason most visitors come here at all: the indri produces a call that carries for kilometres through the canopy, one of the more startling wildlife sounds you’ll hear anywhere. Entry runs about 45,000 MGA plus a separate guide fee (roughly 25,000 to 40,000 MGA depending on the circuit), cash only, guide mandatory; check current rates at the official Mantadia park page . Stay overnight near the park rather than attempting a round trip in one day.
Day 3: Back to Tana
Take an early guided walk, ideally before 8am for the best chance of following the indri’s call, then begin the return drive with real buffer for the same unpredictable three-hour trip in reverse. Use the afternoon in Tana for anything missed on Day 1, and rest; tomorrow is the longest driving day of the trip.
Day 4: Antsirabe, there and back
Leave Tana by 6am. Antsirabe sits roughly three and a half hours south on the RN7, at 1,500 metres elevation, noticeably cooler than the capital, and known for its pousse-pousse (rickshaw) culture and workshops turning out zebu-horn carvings and recycled aluminium ware. A few hours there, an early lunch, and you’re back on the road by early afternoon for the return leg, landing back in Tana in the evening exhausted but with a genuinely different slice of the country under your belt. This only works with an early start and a driver who knows the road; don’t attempt it starting later than 6am.
Is a same-day Antsirabe round trip actually worth it?
Only if you value the highland scenery and the workshop culture over comfort. It’s roughly seven hours of driving for a few hours on the ground, which is a real trade-off, not a hidden bonus. Travelers who’d rather not spend a third of their trip in a car should skip Day 4 entirely and add a second Andasibe night instead.
What should I know about money on this route?
The ariary is the only currency that works reliably once you leave Tana’s hotel counters; credit cards are accepted at a handful of hotels in the capital and Antsirabe but nowhere in between, so carry more cash than feels necessary, and expect big sticker numbers since MGA isn’t a small-denomination currency.

Malaria prophylaxis applies for the whole route, not just the rainforest legs, and petty theft targeting visible phones and bags happens in Tana’s markets specifically, so keep valuables zipped and out of sight.
