Madagascar 6 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Six days takes the 5 day route (Tana, Andasibe, Antsirabe) and keeps going: instead of turning back at Antsirabe, you push six more hours down the RN7 to Ranomafana’s rainforest. The honest cost is Day 6, which is mostly a drive, not a highlight. If that trade doesn’t work for you, the 5 day version above ends more comfortably; if you want to keep going instead, the 7 day version continues on to Isalo.
Book these before you go: an Andasibe lemur walk ; a room in Ranomafana , where lodge capacity is genuinely limited compared to Tana’s hotel market; and Antsirabe accommodation for the RN7 stopover.
Day 1: Antananarivo
Ivato Airport is about 16 kilometres from central Tana. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival or e-visa in cash; the 15-day fee roughly tripled to around 30 euros in February 2026. Visit the Rova hill compound for the city view (a 1995 fire gutted much of the original palace, so this is largely a rebuilt site, still worth it for the hilltop panorama), then the Analakely market in the afternoon for vanilla, spices and crafts.
Day 2: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Three hours east on the paved RN2. The indri, the largest living lemur, is the reason this is the most-visited park in the country; its call carries for kilometres through the canopy. Entry runs about 45,000 MGA plus a separate guide fee (25,000 to 40,000 MGA by circuit), cash only, guide mandatory. Overnight near the park; a Mitsinjo night walk turns up mouse lemurs and geckos for around 20,000 to 25,000 MGA extra.
Day 3: Back to Tana
An early guided walk before 8am, then the return drive west, another three hours. Use the afternoon in Tana to rest; the next three days head a different direction entirely.
Day 4: South to Antsirabe
Roughly three and a half hours south on the RN7, Antsirabe sits at 1,500 metres, cooler than the capital, with a colonial spa-town character built around its thermal springs. Spend the afternoon at zebu-horn and recycled-aluminium workshops, then take a pousse-pousse circuit; the drivers know which workshops are genuine, not tourist showrooms.
Day 5: Antsirabe to Ranomafana
This is the long haul: roughly six hours further south on the RN7 to Ranomafana National Park. The landscape shifts from highland plateau to dense rainforest as you descend. Ranomafana is where the golden bamboo lemur was discovered in 1986, a find that directly led to the park’s founding in 1991; thirteen lemur species live here, including the critically endangered greater bamboo lemur. Arrive in the evening and settle in near the park entrance.
Day 6: Ranomafana, then the long road back
Take a morning guided walk in the park (entry and guide fees apply, cash only, paid at the gate; check current rates at the official Ranomafana park page ) for a real chance at the golden bamboo lemur and diademed sifaka, then begin the return drive to Tana. Be honest with yourself about this leg: it’s roughly nine and a half hours combining both RN7 stretches, so leave at first light and treat the day as travel, not sightseeing, arriving in Tana tired in the evening in time for a late flight or one more night before an early one. Verify domestic schedules directly with Madagascar Airlines if you’re weighing a flight over any leg of this route.
Is six days enough to properly see Ranomafana?
One morning circuit is enough to justify the trip but not enough to see everything the park holds; serious wildlife-focused travelers add a second night here rather than driving straight back to Tana the same day, which this itinerary does for the sake of fitting six days.
Why does this itinerary skip the Avenue of the Baobabs?
Because Morondava isn’t on the RN7 at all; it’s a separate branch reached by flying or by a long, rough overland detour. Bolting it onto a six day RN7 trip means either skipping Ranomafana or adding real extra days, not a shortcut worth pretending exists.
| Day | Focus | Travel | Rough cost (MGA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tana orientation, Rova, market | Airport transfer | 60,000-120,000 |
| 2 | Andasibe indri walk, night walk | RN2 by car, ~3h | 180,000-260,000 |
| 3 | Second walk, return to Tana | RN2 by car, ~3h | 100,000-150,000 |
| 4 | Antsirabe workshops, pousse-pousse | RN7 by car, ~3.5h | 120,000-180,000 |
| 5 | Drive to Ranomafana | RN7 by car, ~6h | 150,000-220,000 |
| 6 | Rainforest walk, drive back to Tana | RN7 by car, ~9.5h total | 200,000-280,000 |
Malaria prophylaxis covers this entire route, and a private driver-guide, not self-drive or taxi-brousse, is the practical default for a six day schedule this tightly packed.
