Multi-Day Trips in Madagascar by Region
Travel advisory: Madagascar has had a transitional government since October 2025, and elections are not expected before 2027. The US State Department rates the country Level 2, exercise increased caution, and applies Level 3, reconsider travel, to six areas. Two of them sit on common routes: the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy, and the Menabe region south of Morondava. Others are the RN13 between Ihosy and Betroka and the Betroka area. The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel but reports gang attacks on vehicles in convoy on the RN7, violent highway robbery at night, and armed boardings on the Tsiribihina River, and it advises against taxi-brousse. Kidnappings have been reported in and around Antananarivo. Use a recognised operator, drive only in daylight and read the UK advice and the US advisory . Cyclone season runs from about January to March, so plan overland routes for the dry months.
Madagascar punishes ambitious itineraries. Pick one region and go deep rather than joining several, because the road and flight links between them are slow. The routes below are the ones that hold together, with honest travel times.
Antananarivo and Andasibe overnight (2 to 3 days)
The simplest multi-day trip is a night near Analamazaotra National Park, also called Andasibe. Tana to the park is 140 km on the paved RN2, 3.5 to 5 hours each way, so a same-day return is a 7 to 10 hour driving day. Sleeping near the park lets you walk the Indri circuits early, when the indri call, and try a night walk. Night walks are not on the park’s own circuit list. Operators arrange them in community-managed forest, and prices are unconfirmed.
The RN7 south (8 to 10 days or more)
The classic overland route runs from Antananarivo through Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Ambalavao, Isalo and on to Toliara and Ifaty. Tana to Toliara is about 950 km, and it needs 8 to 10 days at a sane pace.
- Tana to Antsirabe is about 170 to 187 km and takes 3.5 hours or more.
- Ranomafana to Isalo is about 350 km and takes 7 to 9 hours of driving.
- Ranohira to Toliara is about 250 km and takes 7 to 8 hours on a damaged road.
- Stops worth planning around are Ranomafana, the Antemoro paper workshop and Anja reserve near Ambalavao, and Isalo.
Because of the gang attacks reported on the RN7, use a recognised operator and drive in daylight. Do not route via the RN13 or Betroka, which are Level 3. Fort Dauphin is reached by air only. Many itineraries fly back to Tana from Toliara.
The west: baobabs and Tsingy (about 6 to 7 days, May to October)
Fly from Tana to Morondava, about 1 hour 10 minutes, rather than driving, because the overland road crosses the RN34 Level 3 stretch. From Morondava, the Avenue of the Baobabs is about 20 km north, and Kirindy forest is about 60 to 70 km north-east. The Tsingy de Bemaraha is a further 200 km, 8 to 12 hours by 4x4 with two ferry crossings, and park fees are 55,000 Ar. MNP gives the circuit details on its Tsingy page . The Tsingy is reachable roughly May to October, and the road and river crossings stop in the rains. Some operators sell a Tsiribihina river descent of about 3 days by motor barge or 5 by pirogue. Given the armed boardings reported on that river, book only with a recognised operator. Stay north of Morondava, because the Menabe region to the south is Level 3.
Nosy Be and the north-west
Nosy Be is a separate fly-in branch with its own beaches, Nosy Tanihely, Nosy Komba and Lokobe. Treat it as a different trip, not a quick add-on to the RN7. Robberies have been reported on isolated beaches, so stay at hotel beaches. Skip lemur feeding at Nosy Komba, which uses bananas to lure the animals.
Ile Sainte-Marie
Humpback whales visit from about July to September. This is a separate set of logistics. Do not combine it with the RN7 in fewer than about 12 days.
Planning tips
Domestic flights are fragile, so leave buffer days around each one. Tickets for national parks cost 45,000 to 65,000 Ar for foreign adults, and entry fees are reported to double from 1 November 2026. Carry cash ariary. Malaria prophylaxis applies everywhere outside Antananarivo. Compare driver-guided circuits on multi-day Madagascar tours .
