Madagascar 5 Day Itinerary (No Traps)

Five days is the 4 day route with one real improvement: instead of a brutal same-day dash to Antsirabe, you get an overnight there, which is a genuinely better trip for one extra day. This is still Tana, Andasibe and one RN7 town, not a whole-island tour; that needs the 6 day or 7 day version, which keep pushing south toward Ranomafana.
Book these before you go: an Andasibe lemur walk ; a room in Antsirabe , which has far less capacity than Tana and fills fast in the dry season; and Tana accommodation for your first and last nights.
Day 1: Antananarivo
Land at Ivato, about 16 kilometres from central Tana, and give yourself the afternoon to adjust; the capital sits at nearly 1,300 metres and altitude plus jet lag catches people off guard. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival or e-visa in cash; the 15-day fee roughly tripled to around 30 euros in February 2026, so check the current rate. Walk the Haute-Ville around the Rova for the view across the city’s terraced rice paddies, then the Analakely market for spices and woven goods, priced well below what gift shops charge later.
Day 2: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park
Three hours east on the paved RN2 gets you to the closest rainforest park to the capital, and the reason it draws more visitors than anywhere else in the country. The indri, the largest living lemur, produces a call that carries for kilometres through the canopy. A guide is mandatory; entry runs about 45,000 MGA plus a separate guide fee (roughly 25,000 to 40,000 MGA by circuit), cash only; verify current pricing at the official Mantadia park page . Overnight near the park; a night walk at the neighbouring Mitsinjo reserve turns up mouse lemurs and leaf-tailed geckos for around 20,000 to 25,000 MGA more.
Day 3: Back to Tana
An early guided walk before 8am gives the best chance of following the indri’s call, then the return drive to Tana, another three hours with genuine buffer built in. Use the afternoon for anything missed on Day 1; tomorrow heads a different direction entirely.
Day 4: South to Antsirabe
Roughly three and a half hours south on the RN7, Antsirabe sits at 1,500 metres, noticeably cooler than the capital, and carries a distinct colonial-spa-town character built around its thermal springs. Spend the afternoon at artisan workshops known for zebu-horn carving and recycled aluminium work, then take a pousse-pousse (rickshaw) circuit through the surrounding streets; the drivers know which workshops are genuine production operations rather than tourist showrooms.
Day 5: Antsirabe, then home to Tana
Use the morning for the thermal baths, worth it more for the colonial-era architecture than the water itself, then begin the drive back to Tana with real buffer before an international departure. Malagasy road conditions and traffic don’t reward tight connections, so don’t schedule anything tighter than a three-hour margin. Check current road and safety notes on the national tourism board site before you finalize the drive.
Should I add Ranomafana or Isalo to a 5 day trip?
No. Ranomafana sits a further six hours south of Antsirabe, and reaching it plus coming back adds two full driving days minimum. A 5 day trip that tries to include it arrives everywhere exhausted and sees nothing properly; that’s what the 6 and 7 day versions are for.
Is the RN7 south of Tana actually paved and reliable?
The Tana-Antsirabe stretch is genuinely decent by Malagasy standards, though heavy truck traffic near the capital slows the first hour or so. South of Antsirabe, road quality and drive times both get considerably worse, which is exactly why this itinerary stops here.

The Ariary is the only currency that works reliably outside Tana and Antsirabe’s larger hotels, and malaria prophylaxis covers the whole route, not just the rainforest days.
