Day Trips From Tana, Morondava and Nosy Be
Travel advisory: A transitional government has ruled Madagascar since October 2025, and elections are not due before 2027. The US State Department’s rating is Level 2, exercise increased caution, with Level 3 (reconsider travel) applied to six areas, including the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy and the Menabe region south of Morondava. The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel but reports armed robbery on main roads at night, attacks on isolated beaches and demonstrations that can turn violent. It advises avoiding taxi-brousse, and armed boardings have been reported on the Tsiribihina River. In and around Antananarivo, kidnappings have been reported, so day trips should start and finish in daylight with a driver. Check FCDO guidance and the State Department advisory before booking, and ask about entry rules if you route via Nairobi.
Madagascar has very few true day trips. Roads are slow, distances are long and the best-known parks are a long drive from any base. Day trips work from three hubs: Antananarivo (Tana), Morondava and Nosy Be. Anything further out needs a night away, and the section below says which trips fall into that group.
From Antananarivo
Three short trips work from the capital.
- Ambohimanga is about 24 km north-east of Tana and takes 30 to 60 minutes by car in good traffic, longer in congestion. It is a UNESCO World Heritage royal hill and one of the sacred hills of Imerina, with 14 stone gateways and the royal house and tombs. It is a place of reverence, so dress modestly and follow your guide’s customs, which include entering the king’s house right foot first and leaving backwards. Photos are not allowed inside the buildings. Opening hours are reported as about 9:00 to 17:00 daily, so confirm before you go. The foreign fee is an old, unconfirmed figure of about 10,000 Ar.
- Lemurs’ Park is on the RN1 toward Ampefy, about 22 to 25 km from Tana. It is open daily and visits are guided. Adults pay 75,000 Ar, cash only.
- Peyrieras reserve at Marozevo is about 75 km along the RN2, roughly 2 hours each way. It is known for chameleons and geckos. Ask for the current fee and hours.
Andasibe is possible from Tana only as a day of 7 to 10 hours of driving. An overnight stay is the sensible choice.
From Morondava
Morondava is reached by flight from Tana, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Overland, the route passes the Level 3 RN34 stretch, so do not plan the drive.
The Avenue of the Baobabs lies about 20 km north of town on the RN8, a 30 to 45 minute drive. A short dirt road is lined with Grandidier’s baobabs. Go at sunrise or sunset. Walking is free and vehicles pay a small parking fee, reported at about 5,000 Ar. The twisted Baobab Amoureux is a short drive from there.
Kirindy forest lies north-east of Morondava, about 60 to 70 km and 1.5 to 2 hours by 4x4, with guided day and night walks and a name for sightings of the fossa. The entry fee and hours are unconfirmed, and travel only in daylight. Do not travel south of Morondava, where Level 3 advice applies.
From Nosy Be
Nosy Tanihely is a marine park a 30 to 60 minute boat trip from Nosy Be. A marine park ticket and online booking apply, with a cap of about 300 visitors a day. Operators normally arrange both. Lokobe National Park costs 55,000 Ar for foreign adults and can be paired with Nosy Komba. Do not join any village visit that offers feeding lemurs with bananas or holding them on your shoulder. Robberies have been reported on isolated Nosy Be beaches, so stay on hotel beaches.
Not day trips
Ranomafana, Isalo, the Tsingy de Bemaraha, Nosy Be and Ile Sainte-Marie cannot be done in a day from Tana. The Tsingy is not a day trip from Morondava either: it is about 200 km, 8 to 12 hours by 4x4 with two ferry crossings.
Booking tips
Pay with ariary in cash, because cards are rarely accepted and dollars are not widely taken. Allow flight buffers, because domestic schedules are fragile. For driver-guided options, see Madagascar day trips .
