Niagara Falls Trip Length and Itineraries
Most visitors need two full days to see the falls from both countries, with a boat ride and a tunnel walk included. Three or four days leaves room for Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, Fort George and a hike in the gorge. A stay of five days or more only makes sense if Niagara Falls is your base for Buffalo and Toronto.
How long to stay
- Two days: both sides of the river, one boat tour, one tunnel visit.
- Three to four days: add Niagara-on-the-Lake, wineries and the Niagara Gorge trails.
- Five days or more: use the falls as a base for Buffalo and Toronto.
A three day circuit across both sides
Day 1, US side (USD). Walk Niagara Falls State Park and ride the Maid of the Mist, which sails between April 24 and November 8 in 2026. Go down to the Hurricane Deck at Cave of the Winds, then hike in Whirlpool State Park in the afternoon. Finish at Terrapin Point for sunset.
Day 2, Canadian side (CAD). Cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot with your passport, then stroll the Queen Victoria Park promenade. Visit Journey Behind the Falls and the Niagara Parks Power Station tunnel, which are each $33 CAD for adults. Ride the Whirlpool Aero Car in the late afternoon. In summer, fireworks light the gorge nightly at 10:00 pm, and the falls are lit by coloured lights every night of the year.
Day 3, region. Drive to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a walk along Queen Street, a tour of Fort George, and a tasting at Inniskillin or Peller Estates. Return through Old Fort Niagara at Youngstown, New York.
Extending to five to seven days
- Days 1 and 2: the Niagara Falls core above.
- Day 3: Niagara wine country and, from April to December, a Shaw Festival play.
- Days 4 and 5: take the GO Transit train to Toronto Union Station, a ride of about 2 hours, for the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, St. Lawrence Market and the Toronto Islands.
- Days 6 and 7: cross into Buffalo for the Martin House, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Canalside and dinner in Allentown.
Seasons
Summer gives the longest days, the boats and nightly fireworks. In late autumn and winter both boats have stopped, Cave of the Winds drops to a cheaper winter rate of $14 for adults, and the Winter Festival of Lights begins in mid November. Journey Behind the Falls stays open all year, so winter plans work well around the tunnels and indoor attractions.
Getting there
Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 40 km from the falls and Toronto Pearson is about 125 km away. Amtrak serves Niagara Falls station on the US side. GO Transit trains serve the Canadian side on weekends and in season.
Tips
- Fallsview hotels on the Canadian side look over the falls, while the US side puts you beside the state park.
- Check US CBP and Canadian IRCC rules for your nationality before crossing.
