Day Trips from Paramaribo
Paramaribo works well as a base for day trips. The Commewijne river and its old plantations are a boat ride away. The Brownsberg plateau and the Jodensavanne ruins are a drive south. Prices below are per person and are often quoted in euros or US dollars. Treat them as a guide and ask your operator what is included.
Commewijne plantation cruise
This full-day trip takes six to eight hours and leaves from the Leonsberg jetty on a covered wooden boat. A typical day includes:
- Guiana dolphin watching in the estuary, with no guarantee of sightings
- A stop at Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam, the open-air museum at the river junction
- A cruise up the Commewijne past Rust en Werk, a working cattle and citrus farm
- A visit to Frederiksdorp, a restored 18th-century plantation estate with exhibits on indentured labourers
- Mariënburg, a former sugar factory linked to the 1902 labourers’ strike
Packages cost about EUR 65 to 85, or USD 70 to 90, with the boat, guide, entry fees and lunch included. These estates were built on enslaved labour, so treat the visits as heritage stops rather than entertainment. Check whether Frederiksdorp is currently taking day visitors.
Brownsberg Nature Park
Brownsberg is about 130 km south of the city, and the trip takes two to four hours each way depending on conditions. The road is paved as far as Paranam and Brownsweg. The last 13 km up the mountain is a steep and rough laterite track, so a high-clearance 4x4 is essential. The park covers 12,000 hectares on a plateau about 500 m high and is run by STINASU.
The reward is the view from Mazaroni Top over the Brokopondo Reservoir, where thousands of drowned tree trunks stand in the water. Guided walks lead down through primary forest to Leo Falls and Irene Falls. Animals include red howler monkeys, white-faced sakis, black spider monkeys, toucans and poison dart frogs. Park entry has been listed at about USD 10. Day packages with a 4x4, guide, park fee and lunch run about EUR 75 to 95, or USD 80 to 100.
Jodensavanne and Redi Doti
The drive south uses the Martin Luther Kingweg and Afobakaweg and crosses the Carolina Bridge to the Amerindian village of Redi Doti. The Jodensavanne ruins date from the 17th century and the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. See the brick synagogue ruins and the old Sephardic gravestones. This is a burial ground, so keep a quiet tone. Day tours cost about EUR 70 to 90.
Warappa Kreek
This restored plantation canal in eastern Commewijne is about 9 km long and was dug by hand. An electric boat glides through an arch of mangrove trees past old sugar locks, brick bridges and steam engines, before reaching the Atlantic mudflats. A small private museum is part of the visit. The tour costs about EUR 85 to 105.
Practical tips
Book with an established operator for any trip beyond the city, as the UK government safety advice suggests for central Suriname. Flooding is common from May to August, and the heavy afternoon rains can slow road travel. Take insect repellent with DEET, a refillable bottle and sun protection. Do not swim in the Suriname River near the city.
