Romantic Evenings in Dammam and Al Khobar
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Its page names Dammam among the cities facing a heightened threat of Houthi missile and drone attacks on airports, military sites, ports and energy sites, and says further airport disruption is very likely. The US State Department advises reconsidering travel, and non-emergency US government staff were ordered to leave the country from 23 October 2026. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect flights, tours and opening hours to change at short notice.
What romance means here
Dammam suits a quiet, low-key trip rather than a headline romantic destination. The appeal is sunset over the Gulf, a long dinner and a comfortable resort. Saudi public decency rules shape everything: holding hands and kissing in public are offences, and the fine and police attention apply to visitors too. Plan for time together in restaurants, hotels and at events, and keep the public parts of the day reserved and modest.
Sunset on the Corniche and Marjan Island
The Dammam Corniche is the city’s waterfront parkland, and an 1,800 m bridge leads to Marjan Island, where the spiral tower of about 30 m catches the evening light. Go between November and March, in the hour before sunset, when it is cool enough to walk. Cafes on the island make a good place to sit and talk.
Dinner on the water
The Al Khobar Corniche and Ajdan Walk have seafront restaurants and cafes, and Heritage Village on the Dammam Corniche serves traditional Gulf dishes from noon to midnight. Book ahead on Thursday and Friday evenings, when places stay open to 01:00 and fill up. There is no alcohol: it is illegal for visitors everywhere in the Kingdom, so build the evening around seafood, coffee and dessert instead.
A resort stay
The Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar on Half Moon Bay Road is a villa resort with a private beach. Western swimwear is generally fine only on private resort beaches and pools, while public beaches call for modest swimwear. Spa facilities are gender-segregated, so do not plan a couples’ treatment.
An evening at Ithra
Ithra in Dhahran hosts concerts, films and talks, depending on the programme. Check ithra.com or the Ithra app for what is on, and for the opening hours, which vary by day. Ithra is closed on Sundays. Entry to the Center is free, and event tickets are priced per show.
What this page cannot offer
Dammam has a quiet evening scene with no nightlife, and the romantic side of the trip comes down to the waterfront and a resort. Mosques, neighbourhood heritage sites and Tarout Castle are places of worship or living heritage, so they are not date spots. For a fuller trip, pair a few Dammam evenings with day time at Ithra and a train day to Al-Ahsa Oasis.
Rules for couples
- Public displays of affection, including kissing and cuddling, are offences.
- Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Foreign women are not required to wear an abaya.
- Do not photograph oil sites, ports or government buildings, and ask before photographing people.
- Summer heat passes 40C with heavy humidity, so keep outdoor plans for after sunset.
