Dammam Day Trips: Al-Ahsa, Tarout, Qatif
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Its page names Dammam among the cities facing a heightened threat of Houthi missile and drone attacks on airports, military sites, ports and energy sites, and says further airport disruption is very likely. The US State Department advises reconsidering travel, and non-emergency US government staff were ordered to leave the country from 23 October 2026. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect flights, tours and opening hours to change at short notice.
Three day trips that work
From Dammam the useful excursions are Al-Ahsa Oasis to the south, Tarout Island and Qatif to the north, and Half Moon Bay beside Al Khobar. Each is feasible in a day, and each is best between November and March, when daytime temperatures are mild. From June to September the heat passes 40C with high humidity, so start at dawn or skip the trip.
Al-Ahsa Oasis
Al-Ahsa is the standout: a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, inscribed in 2018 as Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape. Highlights are Al-Qarah Mountain with its cool limestone caves, Qasr Ibrahim, an Ottoman-era fortress, the Al-Qaisariyah Souq and the date-palm gardens.
The easy way there is the train from Dammam Railway Station to Hofuf. Fares start from SAR 35 one way. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Every SAR train must be reserved before you board, through tickets.sar.com.sa or the SAR app. Hofuf is the Al-Ahsa station, so arrange a taxi or ride for the oasis sites, which are spread over a wide area. Entry fees and opening times at the individual sites vary, so ask locally on the day, and expect shops in the souq to close in the early afternoon.
Tarout Island and Qatif
Qatif and Tarout Island lie north of Dammam, joined to the mainland by causeways. Tarout Island has more than 5,000 years of settlement, and Tarout Castle stands on a hill in the middle of it. Darin, at the island’s southern end, is a historic harbour area. A government restoration and development plan was approved in 2022, so plan the castle as a viewing stop and go with a driver or guide.
Qatif is the heart of the Eastern Province’s Shi’a community. Be respectful: dress modestly, do not photograph religious gatherings or processions, and avoid commentary on sectarian history.
Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay is on the Gulf south of Al Khobar, with about 18 km of white sand, calm shallow water, free entry, toilets, showers and parking. A rental car is the easiest way to reach it. Swim only where swimming is permitted, follow signs and Border Guard instructions, and keep children close, because drownings have happened on this coast where swimming was banned. Wear modest swimwear on public beaches. Do not rent quad bikes from roadside operators; they are unregulated.
The King Fahd Causeway is a border
The King Fahd Causeway runs from Al Khobar to Bahrain, with passport control at both ends and a toll of SAR 35 per car per crossing. It has been closed at short notice during 2026. It does not lead to Al-Ahsa or Qatif, and it is not a scenic drive, so leave Bahrain out of a day-trip plan.
Getting around
- Rental cars suit Half Moon Bay and Qatif; Careem and Uber work across the metro area.
- Alcohol is illegal for visitors, and public displays of affection are an offence.
- Do not photograph oil sites, ports or military areas on the way.
