Walking Routes in Dammam and Al Khobar
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Its page names Dammam among the cities facing a heightened threat of Houthi missile and drone attacks on airports, military sites, ports and energy sites, and says further airport disruption is very likely. The US State Department advises reconsidering travel, and non-emergency US government staff were ordered to leave the country from 23 October 2026. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect flights, tours and opening hours to change at short notice.
Where walking works
Dammam is a car-planned oil-era city, so walking means the waterfront rather than old lanes. There is no old town to wander. The good routes are the Dammam Corniche with the bridge to Marjan Island, the grounds around Heritage Village, and the Al Khobar Corniche with Ajdan Walk. Distances were not measured for this guide, so judge each stretch on site; all are flat.
Corniche and Marjan Island
Start on the Dammam Corniche, the city’s waterfront parkland, and walk to the bridge. The bridge to Marjan Island is 1,800 m long, so the crossing alone is a long walk each way. On the island, a spiral tower of about 30 m rises over cafes, play areas and parks, and the view across the Gulf is best near sunset. Marjan is the Kingdom’s first artificial island. Plan the walk for late afternoon from November to March and take water.
Heritage Village stop
Heritage Village sits on the Dammam Corniche. Visit Saudi says no ticket is needed to enter, and the restaurant and cafe run from noon to midnight on Sunday to Wednesday and Saturday, and noon to 01:00 on Thursday and Friday. It is a good place to rest and eat after the waterfront.
Al Khobar Corniche and Ajdan Walk
About 15 km south of Dammam, Al Khobar has its own Corniche, with Salt Beach and Playground for families and the Scitech science centre. Ajdan Walk is a promenade of shops and restaurants close to the water. The evening is the best time, from about 16:30 to midnight, when cafes fill and the heat has eased.
Season and timing
- Best months are November to March; early morning or after sunset work in the shoulder weeks.
- From June to September, daytime heat passes 40C with high humidity. Skip midday walks entirely and carry water.
- Prayer times do not close shops and restaurants, though some small traditional shops pause for 15 to 20 minutes.
Walking etiquette and rules
- Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Foreign women need not cover their hair or wear an abaya.
- Public displays of affection are an offence under the public decency rules.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women and families.
- Do not photograph oil sites, ports, military or government buildings.
- Leave drones at home; they need registration with the civil aviation authority.
Getting between areas is easiest by Careem or Uber, as the three cities run together and walking links them only along the coast in places.
