Mecca with Children: Safety and Planning
Travel advisory: The US advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have reached Saudi cities. UK restrictions concern the Yemen border area and Abha and Khamis Mushait, not Mecca. Families should check travel.state.gov and UK FCDO guidance before committing to dates.
Taking children to Mecca is mostly a logistics exercise: keep everyone together, keep everyone cool, and have every permit in place.
The Haram area of Mecca is open only to Muslims under Saudi law, with ID or visa checks at road checkpoints. What follows is for Muslim families on Umrah or Hajj. Families who are not Muslim will find child-friendly outings in Jeddah and Taif, which are open to all.
Permits for every family member
Each pilgrim needs a timed Umrah permit booked on the Nusuk platform , children included. Book early, keep screenshots on every phone, and confirm the current entry rules for children and strollers with the Two Holy Mosques authorities, since arrangements change.
Staying together in crowds
Fix a meeting point in advance, such as a named gate, and agree it with older children. Write a parent’s phone number on a card or wristband for younger ones. Moving as a chain, with an adult at the front and back, helps at busy gates.
Heat and water
Midday heat in summer can pass 45C, and Hajj 2024 saw at least 1,301 heat deaths above 50C, mostly among people travelling without permits or cooling. For children, that means:
- Plan outdoor time before about 11:00 and after 16:30.
- Offer water often, before they feel thirsty. Zamzam water is free inside the mosque.
- Use shade and air-conditioned galleries and rest more than you think necessary.
- Watch for headache, flushed skin or unusual sleepiness, and move to a cool area quickly.
Indoor exhibitions for older children
Two exhibition-style options exist for families. The Clock Tower museum has displays on sundials, clocks, the solar system and moon phases, with several ticket tiers listed on the official site at theclocktowers.com . The Hira Cultural District, in north Mecca, has multimedia galleries, animated maps and dioramas of ancient Mecca. Check hours at Discover Makkah before going, as they vary by day.
Getting around
The Haramain train links Jeddah Airport and Makkah in about 30 to 45 minutes, with fares by class at sar.hhr.sa . Makkah station is about 3.5 km from the Grand Mosque, with free shuttle buses and taxis connecting the two.
Where to stay
A room within easy reach of your gate saves tired legs. You can check Makkah family rooms on Booking.com and look for lifts, air conditioning and a short route to the mosque.
