Mecca for Couples: Pilgrim Travel Basics
Travel advisory: The US advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia because of regional conflict, and Houthi missiles and drones have targeted Saudi cities. UK restrictions apply to the Yemen border area and Abha and Khamis Mushait, and Mecca is not included. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before you choose dates.
Mecca is a city of pilgrimage, and nothing in it is organised as a couples’ escape.
The Haram area is open only to Muslims under Saudi law, with checkpoints on the roads. For Muslim pilgrims, the visit is an act of worship, and the state of ihram sets rules of conduct that rule out marital relations and the use of perfume. No leisure product for couples exists here, so none is suggested here.
Travelling to Mecca as a married pair
Many married couples perform Umrah together, and the practical side is shared work.
- Each person needs their own visa and timed permit from the Nusuk platform .
- Both travellers need a valid MenACWY meningitis vaccination certificate.
- Women of any age may perform Umrah without a mahram since October 2022, with an approved group, and home-country rules may add conditions.
- Agree a meeting point at a named gate in case you lose each other in crowds.
- Look after one another’s health in the heat, which regularly passes 45C in summer.
What a stay looks like
Days are built around prayer times, with rest in the afternoon. Hotels in the towers around the Grand Mosque are the usual choice for pilgrims, and the Haramain train links Mecca with Jeddah in about 30 to 45 minutes. Fares depend on class, so check sar.hhr.sa for options.
Where couples go instead
For a trip planned around time together, Jeddah and Taif are open to all visitors.
Jeddah has the UNESCO-listed Al-Balad old town, with coral-stone houses and carved wooden windows, and a waterfront Corniche on the Red Sea. It is a short train ride from Mecca.
Taif sits at about 1,800 metres, so evenings are cooler. Its rose farms produce Taif rose oil, and the road up passes through the Al-Hada mountains. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Mecca.
You can look at Jeddah hotels on Booking.com to compare waterfront and old-town stays.
Practical advice
Prices in Saudi Arabia are in riyals, at 3.75 SAR to the US dollar. If you want Mecca on the itinerary alongside a break, keep the two separate: perform Umrah first, then travel on. The 2-day itinerary shows a short pilgrimage plan, and the multi-day trips page covers combining Mecca with Medina.
Book the pilgrimage permit first, and leave the leisure days for Jeddah.
