Dammam Activities: Corniche, Ithra, Beaches
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Its page names Dammam among the cities facing a heightened threat of Houthi missile and drone attacks on airports, military sites, ports and energy sites, and says further airport disruption is very likely. The US State Department advises reconsidering travel, and non-emergency US government staff were ordered to leave the country from 23 October 2026. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect flights, tours and opening hours to change at short notice.
How the area works
Dammam is the port and administrative capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on the Gulf coast. It forms one metro area with Al Khobar to the south and Dhahran to the southwest, so a normal day mixes all three: waterfront in Dammam, culture at Ithra in Dhahran, and dinner or a promenade in Al Khobar. Dammam grew after the 1938 oil discovery, so expect a modern waterfront city rather than an old walled town. The money is the Saudi riyal (SAR), pegged at 3.75 to the US dollar.
Marjan Island and the Dammam Corniche
Marjan Island, also written Murjan and called Coral Island, is the Kingdom’s first artificial island. An 1,800 m bridge links it to the Dammam Corniche, and boats also run across. The island has cafes, restaurants, play areas and parks, and a spiral tower of about 30 m is its landmark. Go in the cooler months, ideally late afternoon so you catch the sunset and the lights coming on along the Corniche.
Heritage Village
Heritage Village sits on the Dammam Corniche. Visit Saudi says no ticket is needed to enter, and the village restaurant and cafe run from noon to midnight on Sunday to Wednesday and Saturday, and noon to 01:00 on Thursday and Friday. It is a relaxed place to eat a traditional Gulf meal after walking the waterfront.
Ithra in Dhahran
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra, was designed by Snohetta and is the best cultural stop in the region. Entry to the Center and the Energy Exhibit is free. The Children’s Museum is ticketed, and the guided public tour starts at SAR 50. Ithra is closed on Sundays, and its other hours differ by day, so check ithra.com or the Ithra app before you set out.
Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay lies on the Gulf south of Al Khobar. Visit Saudi describes about 18 km of white sand with calm, shallow water, free entry, toilets, showers and parking. Swim only in areas where swimming is allowed and follow the signs and Border Guard instructions, because people have drowned on this coast where swimming was prohibited. Never leave children unwatched at the water’s edge. On public beaches, wear modest swimwear; resort beaches are more relaxed. Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar, on Half Moon Bay Road, is a villa resort with its own private beach.
Al Khobar and the evening
Al Khobar’s Corniche has a family play area at Salt Beach and Playground, and Ajdan Walk is a dining and shopping promenade near the waterfront. Evenings are the busy time here, from about 16:30 to midnight.
