Dammam 3-Day Plan: Gulf Coast and Al-Ahsa
Travel advisory, as of November 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Its page names Dammam among the cities facing a heightened threat of Houthi missile and drone attacks on airports, military sites, ports and energy sites, and says further airport disruption is very likely. The US State Department advises reconsidering travel, and non-emergency US government staff were ordered to leave the country from 23 October 2026. Travel insurance can be invalid if you travel against FCDO advice. Check the UK FCDO advice , the US State Department advisory , your insurer and your airline before you book, and expect flights, tours and opening hours to change at short notice.
A three-day shape
Multi-day trips from Dammam are short and local: a coastal day, a culture day and a train day to Al-Ahsa. Nothing needs an overnight away from the metro area, so base yourself in Dammam or Al Khobar. Add a half day at Tarout Island and Qatif if you have a fourth day. Skip Bahrain: the King Fahd Causeway is an international border with passport control and a SAR 35 toll per car, and it has closed at short notice in 2026.
Day 1: Dammam waterfront
Spend the morning on the Dammam Corniche and cross the 1,800 m bridge to Marjan Island, whose spiral tower of about 30 m is the landmark. Eat lunch at Heritage Village, where Visit Saudi lists entry without a ticket and food service from noon. Return to the island or the Corniche for the evening, which is the pleasant part of the day.
Day 2: Ithra and Al Khobar
Visit Ithra in Dhahran, the Snohetta-designed King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. Entry to the Center and the Energy Exhibit is free, the guided public tour starts at SAR 50 and the Children’s Museum is ticketed. Ithra is closed on Sundays, and hours vary by day, so check ithra.com . In the evening walk the Al Khobar Corniche and Ajdan Walk for dinner. Scitech, the science centre, is on the Khobar Corniche if you have children.
Day 3: Al-Ahsa Oasis
Take an early train from Dammam Railway Station to Hofuf. Fares start from SAR 35 one way, and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Book ahead at tickets.sar.com.sa or in the SAR app, because every train is reserved. Al-Ahsa is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape inscribed in 2018. See Al-Qarah Mountain, Qasr Ibrahim, the Al-Qaisariyah Souq and the date-palm gardens, then return by an evening train.
Optional: Tarout Island and Qatif
North of Dammam, causeways reach Tarout Island, with its hilltop castle and the harbour area at Darin. Dress modestly and avoid photographing religious gatherings.
Where to stay
Dammam and Al Khobar both have hotels along their waterfronts. For a beach stay, the Mövenpick Beach Resort Al Khobar on Half Moon Bay Road has villas and a private beach. Compare current rates on a booking site.
