Day Trips from Mecca: Jeddah, Taif, Medina
Travel advisory: The US government advises reconsidering travel to Saudi Arabia given regional conflict, and Houthi drones and missiles have targeted Saudi cities. UK restrictions apply along the Yemen border and in Abha and Khamis Mushait, which are far from Mecca, Jeddah and Taif. Look at US State Department and UK FCDO updates before booking.
A day away from Mecca can be a morning of mountain air, an afternoon in an old coral-stone port, or a train ride to the second holy city.
Entry to Mecca’s Haram area is restricted to Muslims under Saudi law, so the trips below start from the city’s outskirts and railway station. Jeddah and Taif are open to all visitors. Medina’s Prophet’s Mosque is for Muslims.
Jeddah Al-Balad
The Haramain train runs from Makkah station in Al-Rusaifah to Jeddah in about 30 to 45 minutes, and a taxi from the Jeddah station to Al-Balad takes another 15 to 20. The UNESCO-listed old town has tall coral-stone houses with carved wooden bay windows, Naseef House and the spice stalls of Souq Al-Alawi. Train fares depend on class and route, with a sample Jeddah Airport to Mecca fare of about 34 SAR economy and 78 SAR business. Book at the official site, sar.hhr.sa . If you prefer a guide, search Jeddah walking tours on GetYourGuide .
Taif
Taif sits at about 1,800 metres, so the air is noticeably cooler than Mecca’s. The road climbs through the Al-Hada pass and takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. The town is known for rose farms that distil Taif rose oil, and for orchards selling figs, pomegranates and grapes. A taxi round trip typically runs about 250 to 400 SAR, so agree the price before you leave. Taif’s rose festival has run in spring, and dates for next year are announced through the Saudi tourism channels.
Medina by rail
For Muslim visitors, the high-speed train reaches Medina in about 2 hours at up to 300 km/h. Economy fares start from about 150 SAR and business costs roughly three times that. A day is tight for the Prophet’s Mosque, because the Rawdah needs its own Nusuk permit, booked separately and limited to one visit per 365 days. Most pilgrims stay at least one night.
The Hajj sites
Arafat, Mina and Muzdalifah lie east of Mecca, with Jabal al-Rahmah rising about 70 metres from the Arafat plain. Muslims visit them as a ziyarah, and a private taxi for a half-day circuit costs roughly 150 to 250 SAR per car. Outside Hajj the land is mostly open, so ask locally about arrangements.
Practical tips
- Leave early; summer midday heat passes 45C.
- Carry water, a hat and your ID.
- During Hajj week, travellers not performing Hajj can be stopped from flying to Jeddah, Medina and Taif.
For other options, see the sightseeing guide . Take the first morning train to Jeddah and you will be back before the heat peaks.
