Papeete Tours: 4x4 Safaris and Island Trips
Organised tours from Papeete cover the mountain interior, the lagoon, the south-east peninsula and the outer atoll of Tetiaroa. Operators change, so use the names below as a starting point and compare current listings. Prices are in CFP francs (XPF), and they vary by operator and season.
Papenoo Valley and Lake Vaihiria by 4x4
Open-top 4x4 safaris climb the Papenoo Valley, the largest river valley on Tahiti, through the basalt tunnel to Lake Vaihiria. Tahiti Safari Islander runs about 7 hours, with pickup around 08:10 and a return around 15:30, including a picnic and swim stop. 4x4 Safari Hereakimanu takes about 8 hours with pickup near 08:30. Natura Exploration offers a full-day crossing from Papenoo to Mataiea led by a certified guide. A quad-bike tour to the lake also leaves from Taravao. Guided tours are the sensible way to go, since no self-drive access rules are published.
Tahiti circle-island tour
Full-day minibus tours loop around Tahiti Nui. Typical stops include the Vaipahi Water Gardens in Mataiea, Maraa Grotto, Marae Arahurahu, the Arahoho Blowhole, the Faarumai waterfalls and Point Venus. Both gardens and grotto are listed as free entry on visitor sites. Marae are sacred ground, so follow the guide’s instructions and keep off the stone platforms.
Lagoon snorkel and dive trips off Faa’a
The Faa’a lagoon has wrecks of a Catalina seaplane, a Cessna and an old schooner, and the dive spot known as the Aquarium is here. Dive centres listed for the area include FLUID Tahiti in Punaauia, Dive and Sea Tahiti in Papeete and the Ecole de Plongee de Tahiti in Arue. The UK FCDO notes that the only hyperbaric chamber in French Polynesia is in Papeete, so check the operator’s credentials and that oxygen is carried on the boat.
Teahupo’o wave-watching boats
Teahupo’o, at the end of the road on Tahiti Iti, is a heavy reef-break wave for expert surfers only. Half-day boat tours from the Teahupo’o marina let you watch from the water. It is roughly 60 to 75 km from Papeete by road, so allow for the drive.
Tetiaroa by catamaran
Sailing-catamaran day trips to Tetiaroa leave from the Papeete marina, usually between about 05:20 and 06:00. The day lasts around 11 hours, with roughly 5 hours on the atoll and 2.5 to 3 hours of sailing each way. Lunch and snorkelling are normally included, and there is no overnight stay. Poe Charter Tahiti is one operator that meets guests at the Papeete marina.
Whale watching, July to October
Humpback whales visit between about July and October, sometimes into mid-November. Only accredited operators run excursions, and the animals set the pace of any encounter. Book with a licensed boat and never approach whales on your own.
