Papeete is the air and ferry hub for the rest of French Polynesia, so most multi-day trips start and finish here. Plan the flights first, because on the outer islands the aircraft schedule sets everything else. Society Islands circuit Moorea is the easy first step, reached by a 30 to 45 minute ferry from the Papeete terminal to Vaiare. Other Society Islands such as Raiatea, Huahine and Bora Bora are reached by Air Tahiti from Faa’a airport.

Papeete is a working city, and the romantic options here are a handful of places rather than a long list. They suit a night or two on the way to or from the islands. Prices are in CFP francs (XPF). Dinner at Le Lotus Le Lotus is the overwater restaurant at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort in Faa’a. The hotel lists it as open daily for lunch from 12:00 to 14:00 and dinner from 18:00 to 21:30, though the page is undated, so call ahead.

Sightseeing around Papeete mixes colonial-era buildings, royal history and coast-road stops. Most places are free to see, and several are solemn sites where quiet behaviour matters. Distances are from central Papeete. Mairie de Papeete The town hall on Rue Paul Gauguin is described as a replica of the royal palace of Queen Pomare IV. Its counter is open Monday to Thursday 07:30 to 15:30 and Friday 07:30 to 14:30. It is also where hikers buy permits for the Fautaua Valley, though the permit office keeps shorter hours, so see the walking page before you go.

Papeete is flat and compact enough to explore on foot, and two valleys within reach add proper hiking. Wear a hat, carry water, and keep to the cooler hours of the morning. Waterfront and old-town walk Start at Place Vai’ete on the waterfront, then walk into Parc Bougainville with its banyan trees. Continue to the Mairie de Papeete on Rue Paul Gauguin, then on to Notre-Dame Cathedral on Rue du General de Gaulle.

Papeete is a working capital rather than a resort, so the family list here is short. These are the places with confirmed details, and most are outdoors, so plan around the heat and the rain. Prices are in CFP francs (XPF). Paofai Gardens Paofai Gardens is a wooded public park of about 5 hectares close to the centre, run by the city parks service. It gives children room to run in the shade, and the waterfront alongside it looks across to Moorea.

Organised tours from Papeete cover the mountain interior, the lagoon, the south-east peninsula and the outer atoll of Tetiaroa. Operators change, so use the names below as a starting point and compare current listings. Prices are in CFP francs (XPF), and they vary by operator and season. Papenoo Valley and Lake Vaihiria by 4x4 Open-top 4x4 safaris climb the Papenoo Valley, the largest river valley on Tahiti, through the basalt tunnel to Lake Vaihiria.

Papeete works well as a base for day trips because the ferry terminal, the coast road and the marina are all close to the centre. These are the options with confirmed details. Moorea by ferry The Aremiti catamarans (Aremiti 5 and Aremiti 6) cross from Papeete to Vaiare on Moorea in about 30 to 45 minutes. Tourist fares from July 2026 are 2,350 XPF one way and 4,700 XPF return for adults and anyone aged 13 or over, 1,500 XPF one way and 3,000 XPF return for children under 13, and free for under-2s.

Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and the arrival point for most visitors to Tahiti. Prices here are in CFP francs (XPF), pegged to the euro at 119.33 XPF to 1 EUR, and cards work in many shops but cash is the safe choice at market stalls. The US State Department rates French Polynesia Level 1 (exercise normal precautions), and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel; cyclone season runs from November to April.
