Walking Melbourne: Laneways and Riverside
The Hoddle Grid is flat and laid out in straight blocks, which makes Melbourne one of the easier Australian cities to explore on foot.
Laneways and arcades
Start at Flinders Street Station and follow Flinders Lane past the small galleries and coffee bars. Turn into Degraves Street and Centre Place for the cafe lanes, then walk through Block Arcade, which dates from 1892, and Royal Arcade, from 1870. Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane hold the street art, and the murals are repainted often. Allow two hours at a slow pace.
Yarra and Southbank
From Princes Bridge a promenade runs along the Southbank side past Birrarung Marr. Return over a footbridge for views of the skyline. The route is level, so bring water in summer.
Aboriginal Heritage Walk
The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria runs a guided Aboriginal Heritage Walk led by Aboriginal guides. It lasts about 90 minutes and includes a smoking ceremony and a look at plants used for food, tools and medicine. Adults pay AUD 45, concession holders AUD 35, and ages 12 to 17 AUD 22.50. Bookings are essential. The walk meets at the Visitor Centre on Birdwood Avenue and runs on set days, around 11am, so check the Royal Botanic Gardens listing first.
Kings Domain and the Shrine
The Shrine of Remembrance stands on a rise in the Kings Domain, and the walk up from the Botanic Gardens is gentle. The Shrine is a war memorial, so visitors keep voices low. Entry is free, and it opens daily from 10am to 5pm.
Town Hall tour
The City of Melbourne offers free guided tours of the Town Hall. Book ahead online, since places are limited and days vary.
Fitzroy streets
Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street in Fitzroy suit a free wander past vintage shops and street art. No ticket is needed.
A simple half-day loop
Begin at Flinders Street Station, wander the laneways, then cross Princes Bridge for the Southbank promenade. Continue to the Royal Botanic Gardens and climb to the Shrine in the Kings Domain. Trams inside the Free Tram Zone cost nothing, so use one to return to the centre from the CBD edge. Outside the zone, a contactless card or phone works as a ticket for full-fare passengers.
Safety and comfort
Footpaths are busy at lunchtime, and cyclists use some shared paths, so keep to the pedestrian side. Wear sun protection in summer and carry a rain shell in any season, since the weather changes quickly.
