Things to Do in Papeete: Markets and Museums
Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and the arrival point for most visitors to Tahiti. Prices here are in CFP francs (XPF), pegged to the euro at 119.33 XPF to 1 EUR, and cards work in many shops but cash is the safe choice at market stalls. The US State Department rates French Polynesia Level 1 (exercise normal precautions), and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel; cyclone season runs from November to April.
Marché de Papeete
The covered Marché Mapuru a Paraita is open every day and is free to enter. The Sunday market starts very early, around 04:00, so go at dawn if you want the full atmosphere. Produce, fish, flowers, crafts, pearls and food stalls fill the building. Opening times are not fixed in any official source, so plan on early morning to late afternoon Monday to Saturday and early morning only on Sunday, and confirm locally. Bring cash for the stalls.
Roulottes at Place Vai’ete
From about 18:00 every evening, around a dozen food trucks (roulottes) set up on the waterfront square. Expect Chinese noodles, crepes, pizza, and fish and meat dishes at modest prices. Closing times vary by truck. By day the square has public toilets, free parking and a small craft pavilion.
Museum of Tahiti and the Islands
The museum is in Punaauia, on the lagoon side of the west coast, and is a good wet-weather choice. It opens Wednesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00. Tuesday is for school groups and reservations, and Monday is closed. Standard admission is 1,000 XPF, reduced 500 XPF, and under 18s go free. An audio guide costs 500 XPF, and a guided tour on Saturdays costs 2,000 XPF (1,000 XPF for children). The permanent exhibition hall reopened in March 2023, and a photography exhibition runs from 30 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. Check museetahiti.pf for the current programme.
Robert Wan Pearl Museum
This museum on Avenue du Commandant Destremau tells the story of the Tahitian black pearl and has a jewellery showroom. Listings give Monday to Saturday, roughly 09:00 to 17:00, and closed Sunday. Check hours before you go, as listings vary.
Notre-Dame Cathedral
The cathedral on Rue du General de Gaulle is an active church. Dress modestly, stay quiet and do not take photographs during Mass. The parish site, cathedraledepapeete.com , lists Mass times.
Paofai Gardens and the waterfront
Paofai Gardens is a wooded public park of about 5 hectares near the centre. It is a shady place for a break between sights, and the waterfront beside it faces Moorea at sunset.
Heiva i Tahiti
Tahiti’s main dance and song festival is held each July at Place To’ata on Boulevard Pomare IV. The 2026 edition ran from 2 to 18 July. Dates move each year, so check Tahiti Tourisme before planning around it.
Arriving and getting around
Faa’a airport is about 5 km west of the centre, and taxis to central Papeete cost roughly 2,500 to 3,500 XPF, more at night. A rental car is the easiest way to reach the museum, the east coast and the waterfalls, and organised tours are listed at Papeete activities .
