Melbourne Attraction Tours and Guided Visits
Several of Melbourne’s best-known buildings run their own guided visits. Each one below is run by the venue itself, and most need a booking.
Melbourne Cricket Ground
The MCG tour lasts 75 minutes and starts at Gate 3, with departures from about 10am to 3pm. Adult tickets are AUD 38 for the tour alone and AUD 50 when combined with the Australian Sports Museum. The concession fare is AUD 26 for the tour and AUD 32 for the combined ticket. Children aged 5 to 15 pay AUD 17 for the tour or AUD 22 combined, and under-5s are free. Tours run on selected event days only, so check the ground calendar before you plan around a match. Bookings are essential, and the MCG admission page lists current prices.
Old Melbourne Gaol
This bluestone prison on Russell Street is where Ned Kelly was executed in 1880. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm and closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Adults pay AUD 38, concession holders AUD 30, children aged 5 to 15 AUD 22, and a family of two adults and two children AUD 90. The City Watch House experience, in which a charge sergeant processes you as an accused person, is part of the site. Evening tours run on select nights with a separate ticket. Details are on the Old Melbourne Gaol site .
Royal Exhibition Building
Museums Victoria runs the Dome Promenade tour, which climbs to the rooftop walkway around the dome. Bookings are essential. A March 2026 listing showed adult tickets from about AUD 29, including Melbourne Museum entry, but prices change, so confirm on the Museums Victoria site. Three levels are reachable by lift, and the top promenade involves about 20 steps. The building and Carlton Gardens were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
Melbourne Town Hall
The City of Melbourne offers free guided tours of the Town Hall, including the Council Chamber and the Grand Organ. Booking is done through the council’s online page, and several days’ notice is sensible. Tour days and times change, so use the council listing rather than a fixed schedule.
Shrine of Remembrance
The Shrine is a war memorial, so keep voices low and treat it as a place of quiet. Entry is free, and donations are welcome. It opens daily from 10am to 5pm, with the last entry at 4:30pm, and is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Guided tours run on the hour from 10am to 4pm, except at 1pm. Read about visiting on the Shrine of Remembrance site .
Cooks’ Cottage
Cooks’ Cottage stands in Fitzroy Gardens. Check its current hours and entry fee before you go.
