Romantic Escapes Around Melbourne
Melbourne offers romance in small, well-chosen doses, from warm water in the countryside to a slow glide across a garden lake.
Peninsula Hot Springs
The springs at Fingal on the Mornington Peninsula are the classic couple’s day out. Bath house entry starts from about AUD 60 on weekdays and a little more at weekends, and same-day bookings can cost extra. Bookings are essential, so reserve ahead on the Peninsula Hot Springs site . Alba Thermal Springs and Spa, at 282 Browns Road in Fingal, is a second choice nearby.
Punting on the Lake
The Royal Botanic Gardens run punt cruises on the Ornamental Lake daily from 11am to 5pm, from 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027. Each cruise lasts 30 to 60 minutes and is booked online. The Gardens themselves are free to enter. The Royal Botanic Gardens page has details.
Melbourne Star
The Docklands wheel reopened on 15 October 2026. Its ticket list includes a Romance Package and a Picnic Package alongside Classic Spin and Star Class VIP Seat. A ride is a 30-minute rotation. The Melbourne Star site lists current ticket types.
Sunrise balloon over the Yarra Valley
Operators such as Global Ballooning and Liberty Balloon Flights fly at sunrise over the valley. Prices run from roughly AUD 375 to 540 per person, depending on the operator and package. Flights depend on the weather, and you meet well before dawn.
St Kilda Pier at dusk
A walk along St Kilda Pier works at sunset. The Little Penguin Viewing Experience at the end of the pier is free but needs a ticket. New tickets are released every Tuesday at 10am for the following week and go quickly, so do not count on a walk-up spot.
Tea in the Block Arcade
The Tea Rooms 1892 sits in the Block Arcade, under mosaic floors and glass roofs, and suits an afternoon pause between laneway walks.
Choosing the season
The punting season runs from 1 September to 31 May, so winter couples are better served by the hot springs, where warm pools suit a cold day. Spring and autumn give the softest light for the Botanic Gardens and the Yarra Valley. The Melbourne Star also sells a Happy Half Hour ticket and gift vouchers, which work as a gift for an anniversary.
Planning tips
Book the springs and the balloon first, since both fill on weekends. Melbourne weather turns quickly, so pack a light rain shell for evening plans. Tipping is not expected, and a contactless card is accepted nearly everywhere.
