New Delhi Day Trips: Agra and Beyond
New Delhi sits on the main rail and road routes of northern India, so the Taj Mahal, a wetland bird park and a fort-hotel are all within reach for a long day. Pick one trip per day, leave early and check the weekday before you book, because the two biggest drivers of plans are Friday closures and the winter smog.
Agra and the Taj Mahal
Agra is about 230 km away. The fastest option is the Gatimaan Express: train 12050 leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at 09:50, and train 12049 leaves Agra Cantt at 17:35 and reaches Nizamuddin at 19:30. It runs six days a week and not on Fridays, and fares vary, so check the timetable and book through IRCTC. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays, so a day trip works from Saturday to Thursday. The listed foreigner price is Rs 1,100 plus Rs 200 for the main mausoleum, and hours run from about 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Agra Fort stays open on Fridays and costs a foreigner about Rs 650. This is a full day, so start from the station by 08:10 and keep an hour spare for ticket queues.
Sultanpur National Park
This wetland bird park in Gurugram, about 45 km from central Delhi, is best from November to February when migratory birds are present. It is usually closed on Tuesdays and open from about 07:00 to 16:30. Check the entry fee at the gate. A taxi or app cab is the practical way to reach it.
Surajkund
Surajkund in Faridabad is known for the International Crafts Mela, usually held in the first half of February. Outside that fortnight it is a quiet reservoir and park, and there is little reason to make the trip.
Neemrana Fort-Palace
Neemrana is about 120 km southwest on the Delhi to Jaipur road, in Rajasthan. The fort has been converted into a heritage hotel, and a zip-line operates on the site. Prices and day-visit terms change, so ask the hotel before you set out. Allow roughly two and a half to three hours each way by road.
Staying in Delhi instead
Some of the most rewarding short trips stay inside the city: Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar and Mehrauli Archaeological Park fit a day in the south, while Old Delhi and the Red Fort fit another. The Red Fort is now open on Mondays too, after an ASI order in February 2026.
Planning tips
From about mid-October to January, the air in and around Delhi is often poor, and outdoor stops such as bird parks and forts are less pleasant. Check the daily air quality index. Compare group and private options on Viator . Indian e-visas are applied for only on the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in , so allow time before you arrive.
