Haghpat Day Trips: 2 Worth the Drive
Four places get mentioned as Haghpat day trips. Two are worth rearranging your schedule for; two are fine if you already have the time.
Getting a car or not
None of these four require a rental. A taxi negotiated for the day out of Alaverdi covers Sanahin and Akhtala comfortably, and most guesthouses can arrange one directly. Odzun and Lori Berd sit further out, so a hired driver for the full day makes more sense than stringing together local taxis leg by leg.
Sanahin, and the jet fighter nobody expects
Fifteen kilometers away (about 25 minutes), Sanahin Monastery shares Haghpat’s 1996 UNESCO inscription, expanded in 2000 to cover both sites. That alone makes it worth the drive. What most people don’t expect is the Mikoyan Brothers House-Museum in the village, honoring MiG fighter jet co-designer Artem Mikoyan, complete with an actual MiG-21 parked on the lawn. History and a Cold War jet in the same afternoon.
Akhtala, for the frescoes alone
Fifteen kilometers north (about 20 minutes), Akhtala Fortress holds some of the finest and most complete 13th-century Byzantine-Armenian frescoes anywhere in the Caucasus, painted in lapis lazuli and gold leaf inside the Church of the Holy Mother of God. This is the excursion to prioritize if you only add one to your Haghpat stay.
Odzun and Lori Berd, if you have the day
Odzun Basilica (25 km southwest, about 40 minutes) is a 6th-century pink felsite structure, free to enter and still in parish use, with a mysterious twin funerary monument nearby. Lori Berd (50 km west near Stepanavan, about an hour) adds 11th-century fortress ruins and stone bridges over the Dzoraget Canyon. Both are genuine, but neither beats Akhtala on impact per kilometer driven.
The road itself
The M6 through Debed Canyon is paved, but heavy Armenia-Georgia truck traffic, construction, and occasional rockfall after rain routinely slow things down. Budget more time than the map suggests, especially for Lori Berd’s longer drive.
Cash first
There are no ATMs in Haghpat village. Withdraw Armenian dram before setting out; small canyon villages along these routes are no different.
The verdict
If you only have one extra day, do Sanahin and Akhtala together and skip Odzun and Lori Berd entirely; they simply don’t earn their travel time on a single-day budget. If you have two, add Odzun on the way back toward Yerevan, or turn the pair into an overnight loop with the multi-day trips guide .
