Multi-Day Trips From New Delhi
New Delhi is the usual starting point for multi-day routes across northern India. The routes below are outlines to help you decide, with exact train numbers, fares and fees left for you to confirm on the booking day, since they change often. Foreign visitors need a visa for India; apply only through the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in .
The Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
This three- to five-day loop links Delhi with Agra and Jaipur. The easy first leg is the Gatimaan Express to Agra, which leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at 09:50. It does not run on Fridays, and the Taj Mahal is closed to visitors on Fridays, so plan the Agra night around that. The Taj Mahal ticket for foreigners is listed at Rs 1,100 plus Rs 200 for the main mausoleum on the Taj Mahal site . From Agra, the road to Jaipur passes Fatehpur Sikri, a former Mughal capital. In Jaipur, Amer Fort and the City Palace fill a day. Most visitors hire a car and driver for the road sections.
Haridwar and Rishikesh
These two Himalayan-foothill towns lie about 240 km north of Delhi and suit two to three days. Haridwar’s Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri takes place in the evening and draws large crowds; keep a hand on bags and keep children close. Rishikesh, a short drive north, is known for yoga ashrams and pedestrian suspension bridges. River rafting on the Ganges starts from Rishikesh and usually pauses in the monsoon months, so check the operator’s season. Avoid swimming or boating in the Yamuna in Delhi, where the water is polluted.
Amritsar
Amritsar suits two days. The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) and its free langar kitchen welcome visitors of every faith; cover your head, remove shoes and keep your voice low. The nearby Jallianwala Bagh is a memorial to a 1919 massacre and deserves a quiet, respectful visit. Travel from Delhi is by train or a short flight. For safety, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border except the Wagah-Attari crossing, so check its India advice before leaving the main roads.
Ranthambore
Ranthambore National Park, in Rajasthan, is a tiger reserve with morning and afternoon safaris. The park is closed through the monsoon months, roughly July to September, and safari places should be booked well ahead through the official Rajasthan forest booking system. Sightings are never guaranteed, and responsible operators keep their distance from the animals.
Planning the sequence
Start with the shortest trip while you adjust to the time difference. From about mid-October to January, haze can reduce visibility and affect breathing in the Delhi region, so build in indoor stops. If you want to compare hotels in each stop, use a Booking.com search for New Delhi .
