Romantic New Delhi: Gardens and Havelis
New Delhi offers a small number of well-documented romantic settings rather than a long list. Most monuments close around sunset, and the city’s evening dining is concentrated in a few restored buildings, so this page sticks to what is confirmed and suggests how to combine it. Prices are in Indian rupees.
Sunset at Sunder Nursery
Sunder Nursery is a restored Mughal-era heritage park beside Humayun’s Tomb, with lawns, water channels and domed tombs that catch the evening light. Foreigners pay Rs 200, according to the official booking page . Opening hours are 07:00 to 19:00 from April to September and 07:00 to 18:00 from October to March, so in winter the best light comes before the gates close. Arrive about two hours before closing for a slow walk, and add Humayun’s Tomb next door if time allows.
Kathak and dinner at Haveli Dharampura
Haveli Dharampura is a restored haveli in Gali Guliyan in Old Delhi, with a restaurant called Lakhori. It stages a Kathak performance followed by a chef’s tasting dinner, with performances starting at 7:30 pm. The performances run Friday to Sunday, and advance reservations are required through havelidharampura.com . The lanes around it are narrow and busy, so arrange the drop-off point with the haveli and take a licensed taxi home. Prices are given by the haveli when you reserve.
A table in Mehrauli
Mehrauli, near Qutub Minar, has a cluster of restored buildings used as restaurants. Olive Bar & Kitchen, on Kalka Das Marg at One Style Mile, is one of them. Book a table and confirm opening hours by phone. Treat the restaurant as the evening plan and Qutub Minar as the afternoon plan, because monument hours end earlier.
Lodhi Garden and Humayun’s Tomb
Lodhi Garden is free and has 15th and 16th century tombs along quiet paths, with joggers and families sharing the lawns in the early morning and evening. Humayun’s Tomb works well at the start of the day or just before closing, when the stonework is warm-coloured. Hours there run from sunrise to sunset, so confirm the closing time on the day.
Longer escapes
For evenings on the water or a resort setting, look outside the city. The Yamuna in Delhi is not suitable for swimming or boating, so romantic plans here centre on gardens, heritage buildings and dinners, and longer trips need a few days.
Planning
Winter evenings from November to February are cool and pleasant, but the air is often poor from mid-October to January, so check the daily index and choose indoor dining on bad days. Compare nearby hotels on Booking.com and reserve dinners several days ahead.
