Multi-Day Trips From Heraklion, Crete
Heraklion is the island’s main airport and ferry hub, which makes it a natural starting point for trips of two nights or more. Most multi-day plans follow the island’s north coast road, add a ferry, or use Heraklion as one base among several. Allow time for driving, because Crete is larger than it looks on a map.
Island road trips
Two chains work well. The first runs west: Heraklion, Rethymno, then Chania, with about 135 km between Heraklion and Chania. The second runs east: Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, then Sitia. Spend at least one night in each end town rather than rushing back to Heraklion. Driving is on the right, and the northern coastal highway is busy. Mountain roads need care and extra time.
Using Chania as a base
Some trips are better planned from a base on the spot than from Heraklion. Samaria Gorge is behind Chania, roughly 175 km and about 3 hours each way by coach from Heraklion. The walk is about 16 km to Agia Roumeli, a village with no road. Hikers then take a ferry to Sougia or Chora Sfakion and a bus onward. The gorge is open roughly from 1 May to 31 October, weather permitting, and it is closed from 1 November. Entry is about EUR 10 per person, bought through the official Samaria ticket portal . Elafonisi is in the far south-west, 200 km or more from Heraklion and about 4 hours by road, so an overnight in the west suits it far better than a day return.
Using Sitia as a base
Zakros is about 175 km from Heraklion and 3.5 to 4 hours by road. Its Minoan palace is one of the six components of the UNESCO-listed Minoan Palatial Centres, inscribed in July 2025, so it fits a night at Sitia or in the east.
Ferries from Heraklion
Overnight ferries run from Heraklion to Piraeus with Minoan Lines and ANEK, taking roughly 8 to 10 hours. Fast ferries to Santorini take about 1.5 to 2 hours in summer. In winter, fast service is thin or absent, so check timetables for your dates. Treat all sailings as seasonal and look at the operators’ own sites before planning around them.
A sample four-night plan
- Night 1 and day 1: Heraklion, the Archaeological Museum (EUR 20 from April to October) and Knossos (EUR 20).
- Night 2: Rethymno, using the KTEL bus from Station A.
- Nights 3 and 4: Chania, with the Samaria walk on one day if the season is open.
Wildfire risk is high from April to October, so follow local closures and check fire alerts.
