Multi Day Trips From Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Province rewards more than a long weekend. Two multi-day structures cover most of what the province offers: a compact 3-day loop through the city and its two flanking mountains, and the full 5-day Mae Hong Son circuit for travelers with a rental car or driver and no rush.
3-day heritage and highlands
Day one stays in the city: a morning walking the Old City temples, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh among them, lunch nearby, then a drive up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep for the golden chedi and sunset over the valley, followed by an evening at the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road (Sundays only; Saturday’s market is on Wua Lai Road instead, and mixing the two up costs you a wasted evening). Day two is Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng (elephantnaturepark.org ), an observation-only sanctuary where rescued elephants roam in family herds and visitors watch from elevated skywalks and riverbanks rather than bathing or riding them; a stop at Bo Sang Umbrella Making Centre on the way back adds a hands-on painting session. Day three is Doi Inthanon: the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest trail (seasonal opening dates from the Department of National Parks , open November 1 to May 31 only), the Twin Royal Pagodas, Wachirathan Waterfall, and Karen drip coffee in Mae Klang Luang village. The 5-day Mae Hong Son Loop
This is the province’s signature road trip: 600 km across 1,864 curves, genuinely requiring 4 to 5 days rather than the single day some itineraries mistakenly promise. Day one runs Chiang Mai to Pai on Highway 1095 (762 curves, about 3.5 hours), with Pai Canyon at sunset. Day two continues to Mae Hong Son town via Tham Lod cave, where a bamboo raft carries visitors through the cavern, ending at Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu for sunset. Day three heads to Mae Sariang via Khun Yuam, past quiet Shan-style riverside temples. Day four crosses to the Doi Inthanon area via Highway 108, overnighting at a mountain lodge. The verdict
The 3-day loop suits a first visit; the 5-day loop suits a second one, once the Old City and Doi Inthanon are already checked off. Do not try to compress the Mae Hong Son Loop into fewer days: the road itself, not the sights, is what takes the time.
