Bangkok Multi-Day Trips: Skip the Rush

Nothing on this page fits in a single day, and treating any of it as a Bangkok day trip is the fastest way to arrive somewhere and immediately regret the schedule.
Krabi and Phuket, the Andaman coast
Direct flights run roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes, with dozens of weekly services on the Krabi route alone. This is Thailand’s marquee beach region, limestone karsts, Railay Beach, island-hopping around Krabi, or Phuket’s larger resort and nightlife scale, and it needs several nights to be worth the trip at all. Pattaya, the closer and genuinely day-trippable beach option, is covered in our day trips guide instead; save the Andaman coast for when the itinerary has room.
Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Direct flights run about 1 hour 20 minutes on several carriers, dozens of weekly departures from Suvarnabhumi. The temple complex alone rewards at least two full days, so this only works as a multi-night add-on. Compare multi-day Angkor Wat tour packages on Viator once you have the border crossing sorted.
Chiang Mai
About 700km north, genuinely different mountains and old-city character, never a Bangkok day trip regardless of transport. Thailand’s rail timetables list the overnight sleeper (Train #9, 18:40-roughly 07:15, about 12 hours 35 minutes, roughly 940-1,200 THB for a 2nd-class berth) and the daytime alternative (Train #7, 08:30-19:30, about 11 hours); bus is slowest and cheapest at 9-10 hours.
Khao Yai National Park, upgraded to an overnight
About 150km northeast, roughly 2.5-3 hours by drive. A UNESCO World Heritage forest complex with wild elephants, gibbons, hornbills and waterfalls; Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Khao Yai page covers seasonal access notes. A single-day tour burns 5-6 hours just on the round-trip drive, leaving a thin, never-guaranteed window for wildlife. Compare overnight Khao Yai tours on GetYourGuide turns this from a box-ticking stop into an actual nature trip.
Kanchanaburi, upgraded to an overnight
Our day trips guide covers the rushed version; travelers who actually want the WWII history, the museums, both war cemeteries, and Hellfire Pass 80km further west, do far better with a night in town. Search Kanchanaburi accommodation on Booking.com , and book river-view rooms ahead in the November-February peak season.
Every destination here needs at least one overnight, Krabi and Phuket realistically several; if a same-day version of Chiang Mai, Siem Reap or the Andaman coast sounds tempting, that plan belongs on our day trips page instead, and none of these places are on it. See the 4-day Bangkok itinerary as the shortest base worth adding one of these onto.
