Bangkok Romance: Free to Splurge

Not every good Bangkok evening costs money: the classic romantic view of Wat Arun is free, and it isn’t from inside the temple at all.
Wat Arun from across the river, at dusk
Stand at the Tha Tien pier or the Wat Pho side of the river as the light fades and the temple’s own floodlighting comes on after dark. No ticket, no reservation, just a riverside restaurant table instead of a rooftop booking, a genuinely quieter register than either big rooftop bar below.
Sky Bar and Vertigo, for the couple who wants the view
Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower, 247 meters up, open daily 5pm-1am, enforces a strict dress code at the elevator and a one-drink-minimum per person, cocktails commonly 600-750-plus THB. Lebua’s FAQ covers the exact dress rules. At the Banyan Tree’s 61st floor, Moon Bar (5pm-midnight, walk-in) runs drinks-only 1,200-2,600 THB, while Vertigo Restaurant (6-10:30pm, reservation strongly recommended, 45-minute weekend waits without one) runs a full dinner-with-drink experience around 3,650-5,300 THB per person. Reserve a rooftop sunset table on GetYourGuide . Both draw large sightseeing crowds right at sunset, worth knowing before you book expecting privacy.
The Chao Phraya dinner cruise, tiered
Mid-range buffet boats (Chao Phraya Princess, White Orchid, Grand Pearl) run roughly 1,000-1,400 THB; premium boats (Wonderful Pearl, The Opulence) run 1,500-2,500 THB with a candlelit open-air rooftop option; top-tier à la carte or live-show cruises run 3,000 THB and up, most sailing about two hours with a buffet and welcome drink included. Compare Chao Phraya dinner cruises on Viator and settle on a tier before promising a number.
Lhong 1919 and ICONSIAM
Lhong 1919 , the restored 1850s riverside trading post, keeps its terrace and cafes open 10am-8pm daily, a genuinely low-cost alternative to a paid cruise, reached by the same short river shuttle. ICONSIAM’s free promenade and nightly fountain show sit across the water for a second no-cost stop the same evening.
Couples spas, the other splurge
Banyan Tree Spa’s “Sanctuary for Two” , Mandarin Oriental’s “Couple’s Ultimate Escape,” and Preme Spa’s multi-location couples massages sit well above Wat Pho’s budget massage school, covered on our activities page.
See our sightseeing guide for Wat Arun’s actual 200 THB entry fee if you want to visit by day before returning for the free evening view, or the 2-day Bangkok itinerary for pacing a sunset around an early temple morning. Verdict: skip the rooftop reservation on a budget night and let the free Wat Arun view do the work instead.
