Chiang Mai Activities for Every Traveler
King Mengrai founded Chiang Mai in 1296, making the Old City more than 700 years old, and the flat, walkable square inside its 1.6 km moat is still the easiest place to start planning anything. There is no BTS or MRT here, no double-decker tour bus either: red songthaew trucks (30 THB flat fare in town), Grab, and Bolt cover the city, while private songthaew charters or minivans handle the mountains and valleys beyond it.
Temples inside the moat
Wat Phra Singh (50 THB to enter the Wiharn Lai Kham hall), Wat Chedi Luang (50 THB adult, 20 THB child) and the free Wat Chiang Man, Chiang Mai’s oldest temple, sit within a 15-minute walk of each other and open 06:00-18:00 or later. Cover shoulders and knees and expect to remove shoes at any wooden assembly hall.
Doi Suthep, without the myths
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits 15 km west at 1,073 m elevation, reached by songthaew or car up the switchback road; there is no cable car to the summit. Once there, either climb the 306-step naga staircase for free or take the short funicular over just the final stairs (20 THB Thai, 50 THB foreign). Foreign temple admission is 30 THB. One ethical elephant option
If an elephant encounter matters to your trip, Elephant Nature Park in the Mae Taeng valley runs observation-only visits from elevated platforms: no riding, no bathing on demand, no circus tricks. A single-day visit with transfers and lunch runs around 2,500 THB per adult, and high-season dates (November-February) sell out weeks ahead. Any operator offering rides or a scrub-down, whatever it calls itself, is not this.
Cooking, markets, and crafts
Half-day cooking schools (1,000-1,200 THB) built around a wet-market shopping trip are a Chiang Mai specialty, and Wua Lai’s silversmithing quarter runs short repoussé workshops for 500-800 THB. Find a Chiang Mai cooking class on Viator if you’d rather book ahead than walk in.
Getting around and staying comfortable
A rental scooter needs an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle endorsement; an automobile-only IDP will not satisfy checkpoints at Tha Phae Gate or Chiang Mai Gate, and a crash without one voids travel insurance.
