Multi-Day Trips Beyond Chiang Mai City
Some of the north’s best travel happens once you stop treating Chiang Mai as a hub you return to every night. Three routes reward committing to at least one, sometimes several, nights away.
The Mae Hong Son Loop (3-5 days, 600 km)
Route 108 out and Route 1095 back (or vice versa) string together 1,864 hairpin bends through limestone peaks. Pai (worth two nights on its own, for its canyon, hot springs, and night market), Tham Lod Cave (bamboo rafting through bat-filled caverns), Mae Hong Son town (the lakeside Wat Chong Kham and hilltop Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu), and the Chinese Kuomintang tea village of Ban Rak Thai round out the stops. Confident scooter riders do it on automatic bikes with a full IDP motorcycle endorsement; everyone else should hire a car and driver. Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle (2-3 days)
Day one covers Chiang Rai itself: the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun, 100 THB foreign admission), the free Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), and the Black House museum (Baan Dam, 80 THB). Day two runs to Chiang Saen on the Mekong for the Hall of Opium Museum (200 THB, a genuinely thorough exhibit on the region’s drug-trade history) and a look at the Golden Triangle tripoint where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. A third day returning via the Mae Salong tea plantations rounds it out. Chiang Dao (2 days, 1 night)
Seventy-two kilometers north along the Ping River headwaters, Doi Chiang Dao rises to 2,175 meters as Thailand’s third-highest peak and a dramatic limestone karst massif. The Tham Chiang Dao cave system runs over 12 km of passages; the lit outer chambers cost 40 THB entrance, while the unlit inner caverns need a local guide with a lantern for 150 THB. Bamboo homestays overlooking rice valleys and a set of natural hot springs round out an overnight here. Compare hotels in Pai, Mae Hong Son, and Chiang Rai on Booking.com if you’re building your own itinerary rather than joining a set tour. Whichever route you pick, carry cash: card machines are rare once you’re off the Chiang Mai ring road, and drivers on these routes cannot break large notes.
