Chiang Mai Day Trips Within Two Hours
The mountains and valleys around Chiang Mai make for some of the easiest day trips in Thailand, provided you pick a route that actually fits inside a day. A few genuinely do; a couple that get sold as day trips do not.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Thailand’s highest peak at 2,565 meters sits 100 km south, about a 1.5-2 hour drive. The Ang Ka cloud-forest boardwalk stays 10-15°C even when the city is hot, and the Twin Royal Pagodas (100 THB separate entry) and thundering Wachirathan Waterfall are both close to the road. Park admission is 300 THB for foreign adults, 150 THB for children, plus a small vehicle fee. The Kew Mae Pan ridge trail requires a mandatory Karen guide (200 THB per group) and is closed June 1 through October 31 for the rainy season. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls
Sixty kilometers north in Mae Taeng district, about 90 minutes each way, Bua Tong’s limestone tiers are coated in mineral deposits that grip bare feet, so climbing straight up the cascade is safe for most fitness levels. Admission is free after registering at the ranger hut, open 08:00-17:00. It pairs naturally with a Mae Taeng valley morning.
Ethical elephant viewing
Elephant Nature Park sits in the same Mae Taeng valley, roughly an hour north. Visits are observation-only: watching rescued elephants forage and bathe themselves in the river from elevated platforms, with a plant-based buffet lunch included. A single day runs about 2,500 THB for an adult, 1,250 THB for a child, and books out weeks ahead in the November-February high season. No riding, no scrubbing, no tricks; that rules out any operator marketing “sanctuary” alongside a bathing or riding package.
Chiang Rai and the White Temple
The full loop north is 180 km and 3.5-4 hours each way on Highway 118, meaning 7-8 hours of driving for roughly 3.5 hours on the ground. Foreign admission to Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) is 100 THB, and it’s usually bundled with the free Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) and the 80 THB Baan Dam museum. It’s a defensible day if your schedule has no other option, but an overnight in Chiang Rai turns a grueling day into a relaxed two. Bo Sang Umbrella Village
Ten kilometers east, Bo Sang’s open-air workshops are free to browse, and a master painter will hand-paint a bag, phone case, or jacket for 100-250 THB while you watch the paper-making process from mulberry bark. A half day (3-4 hours) covers it comfortably, often paired with San Kamphaeng’s other craft workshops nearby.
What to skip as a day trip
