Family Activities in Chiang Mai Province
Chiang Mai’s family days work best in a mix of low-key nature and one genuinely thrilling stop, and none of it requires an elephant to touch a child for it to be memorable; observation from a platform teaches the same lesson without the stress on the animal.
Pongyang Jungle Coaster, Mae Rim
Two-person alpine coaster sleds descend a one-kilometer steel track through the jungle, with riders controlling their own speed on a manual handbrake. Kids age 8 and up can ride solo; younger children ride paired with a parent. Grand Canyon Water Park, Hang Dong
A former limestone quarry has been turned into a floating aqua park with inflatable obstacle courses, floating climbing walls, slides, and a children’s splash zone, watched over by certified lifeguards with mandatory life jackets for every swimmer. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls
Free, and one of the best natural playgrounds in the province: kids scramble up the calcium-carbonate waterfall tiers barefoot without slipping, splash in shallow spring-fed pools, and picnic in the shade nearby. Open daily 08:00 to 17:00, sixty kilometers north along Highway 1001.
Chiang Mai Night Safari
Open-air tram rides through nocturnal habitats in Hang Dong cover the Savanna Safari and Predator Prowl zones, with giraffes, zebras, white rhinos, and lions visible after dark, plus a musical water and laser fountain show. Open daily 11:00 to 22:00.
What to skip
Tiger Kingdom, in both its Mae Taeng and Mae Rim branches, should be avoided entirely: a February 2026 disease outbreak killed 72 captive tigers there, and petting sedated big cats was never a safe or humane activity to begin with. Chiang Mai Zoo’s panda house is also closed until new pandas arrive in 2027, so do not plan a visit around seeing one.
