Garni Attraction Tours and Guided Visits
Travel advice, as of October 2026: the UK FCDO names only a 5 km strip along Armenia’s eastern border and the M16/H26 road from Ijevan to Noyemberyan. Garni and the rest of Kotayk Province lie outside those areas. Current wording is on gov.uk and travel.state.gov.
Guided Tour at the Museum-Reserve
The Garni Historical-Cultural Museum-Reserve lists an official guided tour at 3,000 AMD in Armenian and 5,000 AMD in foreign languages. The page does not say whether the price is per person or per group, so ask at the ticket desk when you buy your entry. The museum asks visitors to sign up for excursions in advance, and the phone number is +374-10-545570. Entry tickets are separate: 1,500 AMD for adults, 750 AMD for children, pensioners and students, and free for children under 12.
A guide earns its fee at the temple. The colonnade of 24 basalt columns was rebuilt stone by stone between 1969 and 1975 after the earthquake of 4 June 1679 brought it down, and a guide makes that story easier to follow. The temple is traditionally dated to around 77 CE under King Tiridates I and linked to the god Mihr, though that link is debated. The bathhouse mosaic of natural stones in 15 colours is in a conservation project, so your guide may only be able to show part of it.
Garni and Geghard Tours from Yerevan
Many operators run half-day and full-day tours from Yerevan that combine the Garni temple with Geghard Monastery. These are resale listings with prices that change by season, group size and operator, so compare several before paying. Typical inclusions to look for are transport, entry to the museum-reserve, a stop at the Charents Arch and time at Symphony of the Stones.
Some itineraries add a lavash baking demonstration in a clay tonir oven. Check whether a tour includes entry tickets, because Garni charges for entry while Geghard is free.
Quad and Buggy Rides
A quad and buggy operator trades under the name Garni Adventure Park / ATV Tours Armenia and appears on reseller listings. Prices and routes vary, so read the current listing and the cancellation terms before booking, and wear closed shoes.
Khosrov Reserve Guided Hikes
The Khosrov Forest State Reserve is a strict IUCN Category Ia reserve of 232 km2 near Garni. Visitors use set routes with trained rangers, and tours from operators include the permit. Persian leopard, bezoar goat and brown bear are recorded in the reserve, so keep to registered routes. September to May is the best season.
Choosing a Tour
- Ask whether entry tickets, parking and the guide are in the price.
- Ask how long you get at each stop, since a Garni and Geghard day can feel rushed.
- Carry cash in dram for the gorge booth and small purchases.
