Ljubljana Walks: Old Town, Trnovo, Metelkova
Walking Ljubljana by Neighbourhood
Ljubljana barely needs a map, because the car-free centre rewards wandering. Three walks cover the character of the city, and each can be done in a morning or an afternoon at a relaxed pace.
Old Town alleys
Begin at Mestni trg, wander into Stari trg and finish on Gornji trg, the upper street under the castle cliff. These are the oldest lanes in the city, with courtyards, arcades and small workshops tucked behind the facades. They are free to walk. For a viewpoint, take the forest path up Castle Hill, a climb of 10 to 15 minutes, and look back over the roofs. The castle courtyards are open without a ticket, though exhibitions and the tower need one.
Trnovo embankment to Krakovo
Cross to the south bank and follow the Ljubljanica upstream along weeping willows. The embankment leads towards Krakovo, one of the oldest vegetable-growing quarters, where allotments still sit in the middle of the city. Trnovo is also the home of Plečnik House, which offers guided visits only, from Tuesday to Sunday and not on Mondays. This is the quietest route, so pick it for a slow late-afternoon stroll.
Metelkova
Metelkova Mesto is an autonomous cultural quarter set in former Austro-Hungarian barracks, filled with murals, metal sculptures and small galleries. Visit by day or in the early evening, when the courtyards are active but not crowded, and treat it as an alternative-culture quarter rather than a tourist attraction. It is close to the centre, so combine it with a coffee stop afterwards.
Walks that need a plan
Šmarna Gora is a 669 m hill on the northern edge of the city, and a popular local weekend hike. A woodland trail climbs to a hilltop church and mountain inn that serves hot tea and štruklji. Wear shoes with grip, because the path is steep, and avoid hiking alone in poor weather.
Practical tips
- Pickpockets operate in crowded centre spots and at transport hubs, so keep bags zipped.
- BicikeLJ bikes cost €1 for a week of registration, and the first hour of each ride is free.
- LPP buses cost €1.50 a ride if your feet need a rest.
- Free Kavalir electric shuttles help anyone with heavy bags or limited mobility inside the pedestrian zone.

Tip
