Day Trips from Jūrmala: Riga, Bog, Tukums
What to Expect
Jūrmala is itself the classic day trip from Riga, so most visitors arrive from the capital rather than leave for somewhere else. Outward trips from a Jūrmala base are few, and two or three are enough for a stay. All of them start on the Vivi railway line or need a car, and the distances are short.
Riga
Riga is about 30 minutes by train from Majori to Riga Central. Spend the day in the Old Town, along the Art Nouveau streets and in the Central Market, which fills former zeppelin hangars. Trains are frequent, and a ticket bought online costs less than one bought from the conductor. Tickets must be registered when you board. Timetables and fares are on vivi.lv .
Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk
The boardwalk in Ķemeri National Park is the best nature outing within reach. It is free and open all year.
- Short loop: about 1.5 km.
- Long loop: about 3.4 to 3.7 km, reaching an observation platform over the bog pools.
- Getting there: take the train to Ķemeri, then walk roughly 3.5 to 4 km via the A10 road, or take a taxi or bike to the car park. From the car park it is about 800 m on foot to the start.
- Parking: the operator-run car park charges EUR 3 per hour. Roadside parking before the lot is free where it is allowed.
The planks are slippery in rain, snow is not cleared in winter, there are no rails and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs. Stay on the boardwalk. Walks off the boards are done only on guided bog-shoe tours. Route details are on redzet.lv .
Tukums and Jaunmoku Palace
Tukums lies about an hour by train from Jūrmala. Jaunmoku Palace is a hunting palace built in 1901 for George Armitstead, designed by the architect Wilhelm Bockslaff. Museum entry is about EUR 5 to 5.50 for an adult. From October to April it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and is closed on Monday. Summer hours differ, so check before you go.
Lake Engure Nature Park
Lake Engure is a Ramsar wetland with birdwatching towers. Konik horses and cattle graze on the restored meadows, and the cattle include Highland animals. A car is the easiest way to reach it.
Planning the Day
Take the morning train to your destination and keep a return ticket in hand. Driving into Jūrmala costs EUR 5 per vehicle per day, so a day trip by train from Riga avoids the fee. Distant regions are too far for a day from here, so keep to the few trips above.
