Waitomo Walks: Ruakuri and the Walkway
Walking in Waitomo
Walking in Waitomo means short tracks, not day hikes. Most are free DOC or council tracks, and they are self-guided. There is no day-long hike in Waitomo itself. For a guided cave outing on foot, see Attraction tours in Waitomo .
Ruakuri Walk
The Ruakuri Walk starts about 4 km from the village. It loops beside Waitomo Stream to a viewing platform at Ruakuri Natural Bridge. Plan about 1 km and 45 minutes. There are many stairs, the track is steep and slippery in places, and good mobility is needed. Bring a torch, because the platform entrance is dark. Glowworms show at night, best beside the main bridge. Mountain biking is not allowed.
Waitomo Walkway
The Waitomo Walkway is about 3.3 km one way and is signed at 1 hour 15 minutes. DOC notes that real walking pace is often twice the signed time. It starts opposite the Waitomo Caves Museum in the village and ends at Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, and it is part of Te Araroa.
- It crosses private land, so follow the markers and watch for electric fences.
- It can flood after heavy rain.
- A netted tomo, a hidden vertical shaft, sits at the end of a bridge. Stay on the marked track.
- There is a small general store in the village. There is no fuel west of Waitomo.
Te Anga Road short walks
| Walk | Distance west | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Piripiri Cave | 28 to 29 km | free, a 5-minute walk and steps, bring a torch, giant oyster fossils toward the back |
| Marokopa Falls | 30 to 31 km | 35 m falls, a short easy track, about 20 to 30 minutes return |
| Mangapohue Natural Bridge | about 25 km | a 17 m arch; check the DOC page for current track status before you drive out |
Te Anga Road is narrow and winding, with slips and a history of flooding. The district had a major flood in October 2025 that cut roads between Waitomo and Marokopa, so check operator and council notices before you go.
Karst safety
Waitomo sits on limestone. Streams vanish underground, and tomos can be hidden by ferns and farmland grass. Stay on marked tracks, and never explore caves without a licensed guide.
Walks with a ticket
The nearest thing to a guided walk is a cave tour. Waitomo Glowworm Cave is a 45-minute guided walk ending with a boat ride, from $85 adult and $39 child, and photography is not allowed. Ruakuri Cave is a wheelchair and pushchair accessible walk of about 2 hours, from $122 adult and $46 child. Prices are in NZD, were read from operator pages in 2026, and change by season, so check the operator for current rates. Check in 30 minutes before departure.
