Jūrmala Activities: Aquapark, Spa, Cycling
How Jūrmala Works
Jūrmala is a ribbon of settlements about 25 km long, strung along one railway line between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe river. Majori is the central stop, with Dzintari, Dubulti and Bulduri on either side and Ķemeri at the western end. There is no station called Jūrmala, so buy a Vivi ticket to the district you want. The ride from Riga Central to Majori takes about 30 minutes, and tickets are cheaper online than from the conductor.
Drivers pay a city entry fee of EUR 5 per vehicle per day, all year. The machines take cards only. Train and bus travellers pay nothing.
Līvu Akvaparks
Līvu Akvaparks (Viestura iela 24, Lielupe) covers about 18,000 square metres with more than 20 slides, saunas and a spa area. The indoor halls run all year, and the outdoor beach deck opens in summer only. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Opening hours are Wednesday to Friday 12:00 to 21:00, Saturday 11:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 20:00.
A 3-hour ticket costs EUR 35.00 for an adult, EUR 32.00 for a pupil, student or pensioner, EUR 26.50 for a child aged 6 to 13 and EUR 10.00 for a child up to 5. The all-day ticket costs EUR 39.50, EUR 35.50, EUR 31.00 and EUR 14.00 on the same scale. Tickets bought online can be a little cheaper, but you must print them. Children under 13 need an adult with them. Parking costs EUR 1 for ticket holders. Plan a half day or a full day.
Ropes Parks in Dzintari Forest Park
Jūrmala Tarzāns is a forest obstacle park with 98 obstacles, 7 tracks and a 250 m zipline. Net Park sits next door, with about 600 square metres of nets hung some 6 m above the ground. Both run in the warm months only, so check the operator at jurmala.tarzans.lv for dates and prices. Under-18s need a contract signed by an adult.
The park’s viewing tower rises about 33.5 m, with 12 platforms at different heights. Entry is free during park hours.
Sea-Water Pools and Saunas
Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA runs the Sea Wellness area (Jūras iela 23/25, Majori), with a 25 m sea-water pool at 29 to 30 C, 3 m cascades, a jacuzzi, a steam bath and Himalayan salt and cedar saunas. A 120-minute visit costs EUR 39 on weekdays and EUR 49 at weekends and holidays, booked and paid in advance. Details are on balticbeach.lv .
Hotel Jūrmala Spa (Jomas iela 47/49) sells entry to its Wellness Oasis of pools and saunas. Adults pay EUR 30 on weekdays for 2.5 hours and EUR 35 at weekends and holidays for 2 hours. Children aged 4 to 12 pay EUR 15, and towels cost extra.
Cycling
Paved cycle routes run through the pines and link the settlements, and the terrain is flat. Fat-bike hire is listed at ZLX Bike (Teātra 36, Majori) at about EUR 10 for the first hour and EUR 20 for a day, so check the price before you go. Many riders use the firm sand near the water, but follow any local signs.
On the Beach
The official bathing season opens on 15 May. The sea is cold and shallow for a long way out, and a red flag on the mast means swimming is prohibited. Lifeguard stations run in the season only. Windsurfing and kitesurfing happen on windy days. There are no surf breaks, no whitewater and no outdoor climbing. The Baltic has no tides, so there is no tide table to check.
