Jūrmala With Kids: Aquapark, Forest, Beach
Līvu Akvaparks
The indoor aquapark in Lielupe (Viestura iela 24) is the main rainy-day choice, because its halls stay open all year from Wednesday to Sunday and it is closed on Monday and Tuesday. A child aged 6 to 13 pays EUR 26.50 for the 3-hour ticket and EUR 31.00 for the all-day ticket. A child up to 5 pays EUR 10.00 or EUR 14.00. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Online tickets can be a little cheaper, and you must print them. Parking costs EUR 1 for ticket holders. See akvaparks.lv for current hours.
Dzintari Forest Park
The pine park by Dzintari has playgrounds and walking tracks, and a viewing tower about 33.5 m high with 12 platforms that is free to climb during park hours. In the warm months two ropes parks open here. Net Park has nets hung above the ground, with activities for ages 2 to 5 and up. Jūrmala Tarzāns has a children’s track beside its main courses. Both are seasonal, so check dates and prices with the operator, and remember that under-18s need an adult-signed contract at Tarzāns.
Butterfly House
Jūrmala Butterfly House in Dzintari is a tropical dome with butterflies and plants. It is listed as open from late May to early September, so check the dates and the ticket price before you go.
The Beach
The sea is shallow for a long way out, and the sand is fine and clean, so small children can paddle with an adult close by. The water stays cold even in summer. The official bathing season opens on 15 May. Swim only inside the marked bathing area, and stay out when a red flag flies on the mast, which means swimming is prohibited. Lifeguard stations operate in the season only. Notices go up after heavy rain, when the water can be contaminated. Never let children onto the sea or river ice in winter.
Free Museums and Open Spaces
Entry to the municipal museums is free. Jūrmala Museum (Tirgoņu iela 29) holds the largest swimsuit collection in Latvia, along with old postcards. The Open-Air Museum (Tīklu iela 1A) is a late 19th century fisherman’s farmstead with boats, a net shed and a smokehouse, and it has paid picnic and campfire sites. At Melluži Park you will find a playground, a pond with ducks and a fountain. Museum details are on jurmalasmuzejs.lv .
Spa Sessions for Families
Hotel Jūrmala Spa (Jomas iela 47/49) sells family tickets to its pools and saunas. A family of 2+1 pays EUR 67 on weekdays and EUR 77 at weekends and holidays. A family of 2+2 pays EUR 80 or EUR 90. Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA has a children’s pool, and its Sea Wellness family offer for 2+2 starts at EUR 89.
Animals
Jūrmala has no zoo. Riga Zoo is in Mežaparks in Riga, roughly 30 to 40 km by road. Children who like animals can watch the ducks at Melluži Park or visit the Butterfly House in season.
Getting Around with Children
Take the Vivi train and get off at Majori for the beach and the shops, or Dzintari for the forest park. Local buses run along the peninsula. If you drive, the city entry fee is EUR 5 per vehicle per day.
